The head assembly includes a head having a first port extending through the head and a surface defining a portion of a combustion chamber in fluid communication with the first port. The head further includes a first shaft mounted in a first bore of the head between the first port and the combustion chamber. The first shaft includes a first aperture extending therethrough and is rotatable between a first orientation wherein the first shaft blocks fluid communication between the first port and the combustion chamber and a second orientation wherein the first shaft permits fluid communication between the first port and the combustion chamber through the first aperture.

    摘要: A two-stroke engine includes a crankshaft that is rotatable about an axis, and an engine block that includes a combustion cylinder and a compression cylinder. A first piston is slidably disposed within the combustion cylinder and is operatively coupled to the crankshaft for reciprocating movement within the combustion cylinder through a power stroke during each rotation of the crankshaft about the axis. A second piston is slidably disposed within the compression cylinder and is operatively coupled to the crankshaft for reciprocating movement within the compression cylinder such that fresh air is received and compressed in the compression cylinder during each rotation of the crankshaft about the axis. A conduit provides fluid communication between the combustion cylinder and the compression cylinder, and a fuel injector is in communication with the combustion cylinder for admitting fuel into the combustion cylinder.

    摘要: A method for providing a mixture of inlet air and exhaust gas in a cylinder of an internal combustion engine is disclosed. Fluid flow between the cylinder and a cylinder head associated therewith is controlled by at least one rotary valve accommodated in the cylinder head. The method includes rotating the at least one rotary valve to allow a fluid flow between the cylinder and the cylinder head in a first direction and to allow a fluid flow between the cylinder and the cylinder head in a second direction, opposite the first direction, wherein the fluid flow in the first direction and the fluid flow in the second direction are allowed during a single combustion cycle of the engine.

    摘要: Internal combustion engine and method with compression and expansion chambers of variable volume, a combustion chamber, a variable intake valve for controlling air intake to the compression chamber, a variable outlet valve for controlling communication between the compression chamber and the combustion chamber, means for introducing fuel into the combustion chamber to form a mixture of fuel and air which burns and expands in the combustion chamber, a variable inlet valve for controlling communication between the combustion chamber and the expansion chamber, a variable exhaust valve for controlling exhaust flow from the expansion chamber, means for monitoring temperature and pressure conditions, and a computer responsive to the temperature and pressure conditions for controlling opening and closing of the valves and introduction of fuel into to the combustion chamber to optimize engine efficiency over a wide range of engine load conditions. The relative volumes of the compression and expansion chambers and the timing of the valves are such that the pressure in the combustion chamber remains substantially constant throughout the operating cycle of the engine, and exhaust pressures are very close to atmospheric pressure regardless of the load on the engine. The engine runs so quietly and burns so cleanly that in some applications it may not require a muffler and/or a catalytic converter.
