Methods and systems are provided for improving purge air-fuel ratio control. Fuel vapors from a canister and the crankcase are selectively purged to a group of cylinders and not to remaining engine cylinders. Exhaust is recirculated from the selected group of cylinders to the engine intake wherefrom the EGR is ingested in the remaining engine cylinders and the selected group of cylinders.

A device for effecting an axial shift of a rotary shaft such as the camshaft of a vehicle comprising a first component having a shaft and a head, a second component having a first end and second end and a bore extending longitudinally there through, the shaft of the first component being inserted into the bore of the second component, a detent couples the first component to the second component such that rotation of the second component causes the first component to rotate wherein the first end of the second component is countersunk so as to define inclined ramps in walls of the second component and one or more rollers are disposed between the head of the first component and the first end of the second component in rolling contact with the inclined ramps, wherein as the second component is rotated about a longitudinal axis the rollers move along the inclined ramps and act upon the first component to move it axially with respect to the second component which may be arranged to rotate the first component with respect to the second component. In this way the timing of the valves of a combustion engine can be varied with rotational speed of the crankshaft of the engine.

A fluid transfer engine employs a case with a cylindrical inner wall having an operating radius extending from a case axis. A main rotor is carried within the case and incorporates a lobe with a major radius equal to and concentric with the operating radius of the case, the main rotor having a minor radius defining a body. Two peripheral rotors are diametrically opposed with respect to the case axis and rotate within rotor chambers extending from the case. Each peripheral rotor has a radius equal to the minor radius and a center of rotation located at twice the minor radius from the case axis. Each of the peripheral rotors rotates in uniform circular motion with the main rotor in sealing contact with the body and incorporates a sculpted recess for receiving the lobe of the main rotor.

An asymmetric complete-expansion thermodynamic engine cycle is provided by an engine which compresses an air/fuel mixture to a given ratio, ignites and combusts the mixture, and expands the products through a power stroke to a volume substantially larger than the compression volume before being vented and purged to the atmosphere. This cycle is performed by a non-axisymmetric main rotor revolving within a cylindrical housing. Sealing means associated with the main rotor provide for the varied compression and expansion volumes. The cylindrical housing also contains means for air intake, fuel injection, venting, and spent gas exhaust porting.

A balanced rotary cycling machine suitable for use as an internal combustion engine, compressed gas or steam engine, compressor or pump is disclosed herein. The rotor assembly consists of four articulating pistons where the opposite pistons are inter-linked with each other by pivoted rods comprising a parallelogram mechanism and therefore eliminating a need for pivots between pistons. The rotor assembly rotates inside or outside of a circular or non-circular stator depending on the configuration chosen. A variety of mechanisms for shape deformation of four piston assembly during its rotating cycle is also disclosed herein, as well as detailed descriptions of preferred embodiments, including a four cycle internal combustion engine with circular stator, marine engine with polymer parts and a four cycle automobile rotary engine with conventional oil pan. In addition, a method of operation of external rotary combustion engine, employing a high-pressure compressor and an external combustion chamber, is disclosed. This invention also teaches a novel lubrication system for rotary engine providing low emissions. The engine has few moving parts, simplified circular or semi-circular stator shape and utilizes simple and effective sealing techniques. It is fully balanced, has very low friction and heat losses and can employ a pre-designed configuration of the combustion chamber for a desired compression ratio and power output.
