The invention relates to a method of operating an internal combustion engine that relies for operation, in at least one operational range of the engine, on the autoignition of an at least almost homogeneous fuel-air mixture, the combustion being measured and at least one parameter for the combustion in the next cycle being set in function of a signal obtained from this measurement. In order to reduce fuel consumption and emissions and to achieve direct conversion of the load requirements, there is provided that the four cycle internal combustion engine relies for operation, in at least one second operational range, on the spark ignition of an at least almost homogeneous fuel-air mixture and that the combustion event is controlled, both in the first and in the second operational range of the engine, largely independent of the torque of the internal combustion engine.

The NOx estimation module estimates an amount of NOx in an exhaust gas produced by an engine based on a predetermined function of a position of at least one of a camshaft phaser and an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve. The diagnostic module determines a state of at least one of the camshaft phaser and the EGR valve based on a predetermined threshold and a difference between the estimated amount of NOx and an actual amount of NOx in the exhaust gas measured by a NOx sensor.

The valve mechanism has a valve element pivotally attached to an outer portion of the housing. The E-CHOICE fuel system makes uses the kinetic energy (created by movement of the vehicle), available at the drive and/or drag axle of the vehicle, by converting the axle(s) into a generator (G-Axle) to produce sufficient electrical energy to power an onboard electrolysis component (E-Tank). The E-Tank will produce pure hydrogen and oxygen for use as fuel in modified internal combustion engines.The hydrogen and oxygen produced from the E-Tank component will be contained in separate low pressure containment components (H-Tank/Oxygen boost tank—125 psi. maximum). The fuel production components will operate cyclically as long as the vehicle is in motion, regardless of acceleration or deceleration.A computerized electronic control module (CECM) will control all cyclic functions of the production components, as well as the fuel delivery system (FDS), which will deliver variable amounts of hydrogen and oxygen to the internal combustion engine through direct intake injection.

A method and apparatus for increasing the power of internal combustion engines is disclosed and includes the method step of injecting pure oxygen, under pressure, into the combustion chamber of the engine after ignition of the usual fuel mixture. The apparatus includes a source of oxygen under pressure, suitable lines leading to a distributing valve which is controlled by the cam shaft of the engine and suitable lines leading from the distributing valve to the individual cylinders. The apparatus also includes a one way check valve to avoid back feed of exhaust gas into the oxygen system.
