Abstract: An internal combustion engine control apparatus includes a fuel injection apparatus injecting fuel into a combustion chamber a plurality of times during a single cycle, and controls an internal combustion engine that performs compression combustion. The internal combustion engine control apparatus includes an injection command unit and an injection specification determining unit. The injection command unit commands the fuel injection apparatus to perform: a main injection for a main combustion that generates torque; and a preceding injection that is performed at a stage before the main injection. The injection specification determining unit determines a penetration force of a spray produced by the preceding injection or an injection direction of the preceding injection, such that a range of reach of the spray produced by the preceding injection is closer to a nozzle hole of the fuel injection apparatus than a range of reach of a spray produced by the main injection.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for adjusting an amount of water injected upstream of a group of cylinders based on a determined maldistribution of water among cylinders during a water injection event. In one example, a method may include injecting a first amount of water upstream of a first group of cylinders and a different, second amount of water upstream of a second group of cylinders based on operating conditions of the respective cylinder groups. Further, the method may include adjusting water injection and engine operating parameters in response the evaporated and/or condensed portion of water.

Abstract: An internal combustion engine comprising the fuel injector arranged in the combustion chamber. The primary fuel injection and the secondary fuel injection from the fuel injector are successively performed to cause autoignition of an injected fuel of the primary fuel injection and autoignition of an injected fuel of the secondary fuel injection. A temperature region suppressing change of an ignition delay time where a change of ignition delay time with respect to a rise in temperature in the combustion chamber is suppressed appears in the compression stroke at a temperature in the combustion chamber of 700K to 900K. The secondary fuel injection is performed if the temperature in the combustion chamber is a temperature within the temperature region suppressing change of the ignition delay time during the compression stroke. The primary fuel injection is performed during the compression stroke or suction stroke before the temperature in the combustion chamber reaches a temperature in the temperature region suppressing change of the ignition delay time at a fuel injection timing at which the injected fuel of the secondary fuel injection is autoignited after the injected fuel of the primary fuel injection is autoignited.

Abstract: A method and system for monitoring at least one reciprocating machine having a crankshaft and at least one cylinder, comprising providing at least one sensor for monitoring the at least one cylinder, the sensor being in communication with at least one processor configured to measure at least one signal from the at least one sensor and to thereby determine an angular position of the crankshaft; selecting at least one subset of potential crankshaft angular positions; calculating at least one statistic associated with the at least one subset of possible crankshaft angular positions based at least partially on data from the at least one sensor; and automatically providing a user with at least one warning or automatically shutting down the machine if the at least one statistic exceeds at least one predetermined threshold; wherein, the at least one sensor comprises at least one acoustic emission sensor.

As may be implemented in accordance with one or more embodiments, one or more operating parameters of the vehicle are obtained, and at least one qualifying period of time is identified in which the operating parameter or parameters are within a range of values associated with the parameter. A value that provides an estimate of the mass is then generated based on the one or more operating parameters.

Abstract: A method for energy ignition management of a spark-ignition engine includes receiving, by a controller, at least one ignition energy characteristic to affect control of at least one combustion cylinder. The method further includes controlling the at least one combustion cylinder via the controller. Controlling the at least one combustion cylinder via the controller includes adjusting the at least one ignition energy characteristic in response to at least one operating condition of the engine. The at least one ignition energy characteristic is a magnitude of one of a current or voltage of spark energy.

Abstract: A control device for an internal combustion engine has a controller configured to control a fuel injection valve arranged to directly inject a fuel into a combustion chamber, and a variable compression ratio mechanism arranged to vary an upper dead center position of a piston, and thereby to vary a compression ratio of the internal combustion engine. The controller is configured to control a fuel cut by which the fuel injection from the fuel injection valve is stopped, when a predetermined fuel cut condition is satisfied during a traveling of a vehicle. The fuel injection from the fuel injection valve is restarted when a predetermined fuel cut recovery condition is satisfied during the fuel cut.
