A hand pump for inflating rafts or similar inflatables has a first piston with a relatively low pumping volume which is capable of pumping relatively small volumes of air into a raft as the raft becomes full and is approaching its maximum pressure, and a second piston with a larger pumping volume that can pump larger volumes of air into a raft when it is empty or only partially filled. Both pistons are operated with a single plunger. When the plunger is rotated in a first direction to a first position a locking mechanism allows it to operate only the first piston, and when the plunger is rotated in a second direction to a second position the locking mechanism allows it to operate only the second piston.

A piston pump which is intended particularly for use in a slip-controlled hydraulic vehicle brake system. To increase a pumping volume of the piston pump at low pumping pressure, the piston pump includes a body embodied preferably as an annular body which is attached axially displaceably to the piston. The body increases a cross- sectional area of the piston and is axially acted upon by a spring element. At low pressure, the piston pump pumps with the entire cross-sectional area of the piston and the body while conversely at a higher pumping pressure, the body is held back counter to the force of the spring element and does not move together with the piston so that then the piston pumps only with its own cross-sectional area. The piston pump of the invention has the advantage of improved pressure buildup dynamics when the pumping pressure at the onset of pumping is low.

Outlet passage means and outlet check valve means are provided in the head portion of the cartridge to control discharge of fluid from the pump, and inlet passage means and inlet check valve means are provided in the pump piston to control intake of fluid.

A slurry pump has slurry hopper and dual pumping cylinders. The slurry pumping members are driven by opposite-phase actuators. Each actuator has a rigid-hollow-stem partition dividing the space between the actuator plunger and the cylinder into two drive chambers of different areas selectively supplied with pressurized fluid to drive the plunger with a selected force and speed. An associated valve shuts off flow to one of the drive chambers and is controlled at any given time to occupy the same position as a corresponding valve of the other actuator. The valves coordinate supply of fluid to corresponding drive chambers on alternate strokes of two actuators.

An air compressor having a piston driven via a crankshaft from an input shaft by means of a multi-plate clutch which is normally held in engaged condition by a spring device. The clutch and spring device are contained within a housing which includes a retainer placed, after the spring device has been pre-loaded to a desired extent, in a position determined by said pre-loading and secured in that position to maintain the spring device in pre-loaded state. The crankshaft is housed within a crankcase and passages interconnect the interiors of the crankcase and clutch housing, with the casing ends of the passages at a higher level than a predetermined permissible oil level for the crankcase. This permits crankcase pressure during operation to expel oil from the crankcase along the passage into the clutch casing, while limiting the height to which oil may accumulate in the crank case when the piston is stationary.
