A gearshift control method for a motor vehicle whose drive train comprises a turbo-charged combustion engine, a startup clutch and a shift clutch and an automatic stepped transmission, in which drive engine torque deficiencies, that occur during the build-up of load at the end of a tractive upshift, are avoided without assisting the engine with an additional device or increasing the charge pressure. The method provides that the engine accelerates at the earliest, after the disengagement of the load gear, and at the latest, at the start of the load build-up after the engagement of the target gear up to the boost threshold speed or an engine speed which is slightly above the boost threshold speed, and is loaded, during the load build-up, with a largely constant engine speed beyond the intake torque of the engine to nearly the full load torque, before slipping of the friction clutch ends.

In order to alleviate sporadic shift shock when a transmission associated with a supercharged internal combustion engine undergoes an upshift while the engine is operating under minimal load (e.g. with the accelerator pedal non-depressed) the supercharge pressure is monitored and if the pressure is above a predetermined limit during a minimal load upshift, the pressure generated by the supercharging device is reduced and at the same time an idle control system feed-back meters the amount of air supplied to the engine so that the rate at which the engine speed reduces is maintained essentially constant irrespective of the initial supercharge pressure.

An apparatus automatically shifts a vehicle transmission, according to a shift pattern and on the basis of a detected parameter of the pattern. The shift pattern or the detected parameter is compensated by a compensating coefficient determined from an actual intake air quantity of the engine, and a required intake air quantity calculated from the throttle opening and the engine speed. The apparatus includes an arrangement for adjusting the compensating coefficient so as to prevent busy shifting actions of the transmission upon changing of the throttle opening, or an arrangement for determining the compensating coefficient so as to reflect the driver's desire for accelerating the vehicle, preferably depending upon the vehicle running condition. An arrangement adjusts compensating coefficient so as to reduce an influence of errors in the required and actual intake air quantity, or an influence of chronological change of the engine, or prevent unnecessary shift-up action of the transmission when the air conditioner is on. A further arrangement replaces the calculated compensating coefficient by a lower or upper limit or a standard value if the calculated coefficient is abnormally small or large.
