Abstract: Modular carriage for varying spacing between ends of polymer pipe during fusion. The modular carriage includes a fixed jaw; an inner movable jaw; an outer moveable jaw and a plurality of guide rods. The fixed jaw being adapted for tool free engagement with the terminal ends of the plurality of guide rods. A carriage cylinder is associated with at least two of the guide rods and mounted for reciprocal travel along the length of its associated guide rod. The movable jaws being adapted for tool free engagement with at least two carriage cylinders for reciprocal travel therewith. A combined hydraulic cylinder/guide rod includes a guide rod with an integral guide rod piston, a cylindrical tube, and a guide rod gland on each end of the cylinder tube.

Abstract: A system for shoring a trench, which is dug for receiving a pipeline and includes spaced apart sidewalls, includes at least two supporting units that are spaced apart from one another in the longitudinal direction of the trench and configured for absorbing transverse forces from the sidewalls. Disposed between the two supporting units is a plurality of shoring units, each configured for supporting the sidewalls of the trench. Together with the supporting units, the shoring units are configured to form a barrier-free lowering space within which the pipe can be lowered into the trench from outside the trench to the floor of the trench. A method for laying a pipe using the shoring system is also disclosed.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for aligning fastener holes of two components. An alignment fixture includes two mating fixtures. Each mating fixture includes a reference plate that is aligned to the fastener holes of one of the components. Each mating fixture also includes an alignment device. The alignment devices can be aligned with the respective reference plates such that the alignment between the reference plates and the fastener holes are transferred to the alignment devices. Once aligned, the alignment devices can be temporarily attached to the respective components at locations away from the fastener holes. The reference plates can then be removed. Thereafter, the components can be brought together such that mating features on the alignment devices engage. Engagement of the mating features aligns the two components such that the fastener holes on the components are aligned.

Abstract: A laser target assembly, which doubles as a pipe plug, has an outer sheath with a first end that fits within the end of a cut section of pipe, and a second, larger-diameter end that fits into the bell of an uncut section. A circular interior panel, made of tough plastic, is positioned in about the middle of the sheath perpendicular to its central axis. A lower half of the panel, which functions as the target, is opaque; the balance is transparent. A target scale, having evenly-spaced linear markings, is provided on the opaque portion of the panel. A bubble level, positioned within the larger-diameter end adjacent the panel, enables a pipe layer to position the target scale in a vertical orientation. Interior handles are used to adjust axial alignment of target assembly and remove the target assembly when it is installed within a bell.
