Abstract: A photodetector is provided with a housing that has a discontinuity formed in an outer surface of its light transmissive portion. The discontinuity serves to inhibit liquid droplets from adhering to the outer surface of the endface in the region where the discontinuity is located. Alternative embodiments of the present invention include discontinuities formed in the outer surfaces of housing windows which have flat inner surfaces or inner surfaces which are shaped to formed lenses. By preventing liquid droplets from adhering to the outer surface of the window, the present invention prevents the reflective liquid surfaces of droplets from creating false signals for the photodetector by reflecting light back from the light source toward a light sensitive component.

Abstract: A photoelectric device is provided which incorporates a one piece housing having a first end which is light transmissive and liquid impermeable. An opening is provided at the other end of the tubular structure for insertion of photoelectric and electronic components into the cavity of the housing structure. A cover is used to seal an opening at the second end. The cover is ultrasonically welded to the second end of the tubular structure and a cable means is provided to permit electrical current to pass through the cover at the second end of the housing structure. The first end of the tubular structure, which is transmissive to visible, infrared or ultraviolet light can be formed into one or more lenses, depending on the application of the photoelectric device. Threads are provided in the outer cylindrical surface of the housing to aid in attaching the photoelectric device to brackets with the use of threaded nuts.

Abstract: A device for monitoring low levels of light emission in a selected underwr environment is provided with a photodetector having a light sensitive surface oriented into the environment, the photodetector generating electrical signals which are representative of light impinging upon the light sensitive surface. A window is positioned between the light sensitive surface and the underwater environment to protect the photodetector from the underwater environment, and a first material is positioned between the window and the underwater environment to prevent biological growth upon the window. A second material is placed in cooperative relationship with the first material to shift the wavelengths of certain light photons occurring in the underwater environment from a first wavelength range to a second wavelength range, in order to increase the attenuation lengths of the photons before they pass through the window.

Abstract: An opto-mechanical package may include a package body having a first opening. The opto-mechanical package may include a coupler in the first opening of the package body. The coupler may have a second opening. The coupler may comprise a flexible element. A coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of a material of the coupler may be less than a CTE of a material of the package body. The opto-mechanical package may include a window in the second opening of the coupler. A CTE of a material of the window may be less than the CTE of the material of the coupler. The opto-mechanical package may include a first epoxy joint between a surface of the package body and a surface of the coupler. The opto-mechanical package may include a second epoxy joint between a surface of the coupler and a surface of the window.

Abstract: The invention relates to a radiation sensor device comprising a housing, a radiation sensor secured with respect to a first portion of the housing and a heat pipe in thermal communication with the first portion of the housing, the heat pipe being configured to transfer heat from portion of the house to a second portion of the housing remote from the first portion of the housing. The heat pipe may be used advantageously to transport or transfer heat away from the sensor components of the device to an area remote therefrom. The heat pipe can be used to transfer heat at a rate that is thousands of times higher than copper. The radiation sensor device may be used in an ultraviolet radiation fluid treatment system such as an ultraviolet radiation water disinfection system.
