A method and apparatus for producing holograms may use a computer generated 3-D model or data generated using multiple 2-D camera images taken of a real 3-D object or scene. The data is digitally processed and displayed on a high resolution spatial light modulator (SLM). A low energy pulsed laser records composite holograms on a holographic emulsion using a special optical design. Restricted or full parallax master transmission or reflection type composite holograms, known as H1 holograms, may be created that can be copied using traditional methods to produce full or single color rainbow white-light transmission holograms, achromatic white-light transmission holograms or single or full-color white-light reflection holograms. Alternatively, full or single color rainbow white-light transmission composite holograms, achromatic white-light transmission composite holograms or single or full-color white-light reflection composite holograms may be directly written without passing through the intermediate stage of the H1 transmission hologram.

A visually perceivable original image 11 and a visually unperceivable original image 12 (micro-characters) are defined, and sample point sources of light P are defined at a low density on the original image 11 and at a high density on the original image 12. Interference fringes of object light coming from the point light sources on the original image 11 and reference light R are found on each computation point within an area α1 on a recording surface 20, and interference fringes of object light coming from point light sources on the original image 12 and reference light R are found on each computation point within an area α2 on the recording surface 20. The light sources that become samples are defined at a given pitch on sectional lines obtained by cutting the original images 11 and 12 by a multiplicity of sections (parallel with an XZ plane) located at a given spacing. The section-to-section spacing for the original image 12 is made narrows than that for the original image 11.

The present invention relates to digital watermarks integrated into holograms, watermarked hologram structures, and related applications as an authentication technique. One method creates a watermark image, and then embeds the watermark image into a holographic structure. The holographic structure is carried by a smart card. The smart card includes additional information. In one embodiment, the digital watermark includes information bits, and these information bits are used to authenticate the hologram, or the smart card. In another embodiment, the watermark's information bits are compared with the additional information carried by the smart card. The result of the comparison is used to authenticate the smart card or the hologram.
