The ability to perform Assembly/Disassembly analysis of one or more components of the geometric model (e.g., a CAD model) of a multi-component assembly is helpful for design, construction and tear-down, maintenance (in-place and replacement), and reuse/recycling of the assembly. To facilitate assembly and disassembly analysis of geometric models, methods have been developed which allow generating, editing, validating and animating/digitizing assembly/disassembly sequences and directions for 3D geometric models, e.g., CAD models. These methods allow assembly/disassembly analysis to be performed based on non-contact geometric reasoning (i.e., spatial reasoning rather than contact reasoning) to determine an optimal non-interfering sequence (a valid sequence) to disassemble/assemble the modeled components. The methods are readily implemented in computers and similar electronic processing units to allow automated assembly/disassembly analysis, as exemplified by a software system called Assembly Disassembly in Three Dimensions (A3D). The A3D system maintains a hierarchical assembly structure for the geometric model and allows the user to add constraints to possible assembly/disassembly sequences, edit the overall shape of a modeled component, compute the resultant sequence of component removals/additions and their paths, and visualize assembly/disassembly by displaying the assembled and disassembled model and animating its assembly/disassembly steps.

A directed graph expresses a connection precedence relationship in which the component is depicted by a node and a connection precedence relationship between the components which is depicted by a directed edge based on the detection result. A unit of disassembling and a disassembling order proposal based on the connection precedence relationship is generated, and an assembling order/direction/motion generation unit generates a disassemble direction based on the unit of disassembling and the disassembling order proposal and an assembly graph to generate a disassembling direction and a disassembling order, and reversely converts the generated disassembling direction and the generated disassembling order to derive an assembling order and an assembling direction.

A method, a computer program product and to a data processing installation are provided for investigation of how a technical system which is composed of components can be broken down. Design models of this system and of its components are predetermined. Rays which originate from selected foot points on the surface of the design model are calculated for each component design model. The process determines how many rays which start at the foot point and run in the direction of the predetermined direction vectors meet the design model of at least one other component. Each component is weighted as a function of these numbers. The result is determined that the component with the highest weighting can be removed from the system.
