The present invention relates to disk data storage media including magnetic, magneto-optical and optical media such as CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-RAM, Mini-disks and other disk media. It provides for new disk media featuring a data storage surface on the edge of the disk. This novel edge track data surface may be marked, inscribed or recorded during manufacture or this new data surface may be created and utilized later. In addition, methods to manufacture, exploit and convert conventional disk media to that having an edge track data surface are taught herein.

An improved digital optical compact disc is disclosed which incorporates a further information storage element or area for storage and retrieval of track play selection information. The further storage area is comprised of defined information containing regions whose shading or alteration by the user indicates whether a corresponding track is to be skipped or played. An improved compact disc player reads the information containing defined regions and is capable of automatically selecting particular tracks for play. The information contained in the defined regions is stored in a format which is at-once visually-recognizable, machine-readable and manually-alterable.

Disclosed are medium and methods for storage and reading of stored information. The storage medium comprises an oxide layer having a plurality of pits and projections on the oxide layer surface. Information storage is achieved by applying voltage or light, in accordance to information signals, to the oxide layer, to differentially heat said oxide layer and create a plurality of portions which contain different quantities of oxygen. Stored information is read by the application of voltage or light to the oxide layer containing a plurality of portions containing different quantity of oxygen and detection of the electrical resistance or light reflectivity of each of said plurality of portions.

An information storage disk is provided with a dense array of detectable marks. This pattern does not interfere with or use any otherwise available recording capacity of the storage medium. The marks are detected by a sensor different from any transducer used to read or write information into the storage medium. Information storage tracks are defined by the pattern rather than by any recorded information in the storage medium. In the preferred embodiment the storage medium is a conventional magnetic recording layer and the pattern of detectable marks are optically reflective or non-reflective spots overlying or underlying the magnetic storage medium.The sensor is mounted over the pattern for common movement with the storage medium transducer. As the storage disk spins, the sensor produces a signal which varies as individual marks pass by. From the sensor signal is derived a signal directly related to the rate at which marks are passing under the sensor. This mark sensing rate at which marks are passing under the sensor is proportional to the product of the linear velocity of the disk under the sensor and the density of the marks in the detection region. Each discrete information storage track is characterized and defined by a discrete mark sensing rate and physically lies along a path such that the mark sensing rate obtained from the sensor attached to the transducer is substantially constant along the path and is equal to the discrete mark sensing rate characterizing and defining that track. A servo control system responding to the mark sensing rate positions the transducer such that the mark sensing rate is maintained at the rate characterizing and defining the desired track.

The specification describes an audio-visual reproduction device for transmitted light recordings of picture, audio and control signals, in a spiral on a disc-shaped information vehicle. Adjacent to the information vehicle there is an arrangement, including on one side an illuminating device and on the other side an optical sensing device for the signals. Furthermore means are provided by which the signals from the information vehicle are converted into pulses processed by a TV receiver. Displacements of the vehicle in the direction perpendicular to its plane are compensated for on the basis of optical signals. Picture, audio and control signals of the information track are continuously projected on to a single line photodiode array by an objective, which is caused automatically to follow the vertical displacements of the information vehicle, that is to say such displacements as occur perpendicularly to its plane. The information track has a strip-like control track for compensating for vertical displacements. Means are provided for resetting the lateral drift of the light cone which is incident on the photodiode array from the objective, in accordance with the illumination of diodes intended for the compensation of the horizontal displacements of the information vehicle by virtue of the signal track associated with these diodes. Means are provided for follow-up of the objective in accordance with the illumination of the diodes intended for the compensation of the vertical displacements of the information vehicle by means of the control track associated with these diodes.
