摘要: A data storage system that includes a positioning system for positioning the write/read mechanism and the storage medium of the data storage device with respect to each other in first and second predefined directions. The positioning system comprises a positioning apparatus comprising microfabricated first and second positioning assemblies. The positioning system further comprises a controller to position a positionable support structure of the first positioning assembly in a first predefined direction within a range of positioning that is larger than the range of movement of a moveable support structure of the first positioning assembly by controlling (A) a stationary support structure clamp in clamping and unclamping the positionable structure to and from the support structure, (B) a moveable structure clamp in clamping and unclamping the positionable support structure to and from the moveable support structure, and (C) the movement of the moveable support structure.

摘要: A memory cell uses a pair of cantilevers to store a bit of information. Changing the relative position of the cantilevers determines whether they are electrically conducting or not. The on and off state of this mechanical latch is switched by using, for example, electrostatic, electromagnetic or thermal forces applied sequentially on the two cantilevers to change their relative position. The amount of power required to change the state of the cell is reduced by supporting at least one of the cantilevers with at least one lateral projection that is placed in torsion during cantilever displacement. After a bit of data is written, the cantilevers are locked by mechanical forces inherent in the cantilevers and will not change state unless a sequential electrical writing signal is applied. The sequential nature of the required writing signal makes inadvertent, radiation or noise related data corruption unlikely.

摘要: M-ary angle modulation is used to record digital data at high density on a disk. In one embodiment, data symbols are encoded by assigning each data symbol a phase representation in terms of a carrier signal, the disk is physically altered in such a manner as to represent the carrier signal, and, at defined intervals, a phase angle of the carrier signal is changed by one of M of possible phase increments, where M equals two to the power of a number of data bits in a data symbol. M data bits are therefore recorded per each of the defined intervals. In another embodiment, a frequency of the carrier signal is changed to have one of M possible frequencies.

摘要: A capacitance detector for detecting the information recorded in the form of a series of microscopic pits on a capacitance disc record. The detector comprises, within an outer conductor, a dielectric support, an oscillator having a first line conductor on the support for generating microwave energy, a coaxial resonator having a second line conductor on the dielectric support, the second line conductor being coupled to the electrode of a capacitance detection stylus. Means are provided for inductively coupling the microwave energy from the oscillator to the resonator. This coupling means comprises a loop having a first section inductively coupled with said first line conductor and a second section inductively coupled with said second line conductor, and a capacitor connected from an intermediate point between the first and second sections to ground, so that the microwave energy coupled to the second line conductor is modulated in amplitude with capacitance variations corresponding to the microscopic pits. An amplitude demodulator is provided for demodulating the amplitude-modulated energy to derive a signal representing the capacitance variation on the record.

摘要: A signal pickup device comprises a reproducing stylus for tracing a track on a rotary recording medium thereby to reproduce the information signal recorded thereon, a cantilever provided at a free distal end thereof with the reproducing stylus, means for supporting the cantilever so as to be rotatable about substantially proximal root end thereof and movable in an longitudinal direction thereof, coil means including at least two movable coils fixed to the support means, means for generating a control signal current in response to deviation of the tracing position of the reproducing stylus from a track to be traced, and supplying the control signal to the coils, and magnetic field forming means secured at a predetermined position of a main body of the device and adapted to apply to the coils a magnetic field in a direction parallel with the rotary recording medium. The coils undergo a motion due to a mutual interaction between the magnetic field and the current flowing therethrough, whereby the reproducing stylus is displaced by way of the cantilever at least in the width of the track and is thereby tracking controlled.
