A stabilized laser source includes a fiber-ring Brillouin laser that incorporates a circulator for non-reciprocal operation and for launching of a pump optical signal. Most of the pump optical signal is launched in a forward direction and drives Brillouin laser oscillation in the backward direction, a portion of which exits via an optical coupler as the optical output of the laser source. A small fraction of the pump optical signal is launched in the backward direction via the optical coupler, and a fraction of that backward-propagating pump optical signal exits via the optical coupler as an optical feedback signal. A frequency-locking mechanism receives the optical feedback signal and controls the pump optical frequency to maintain resonant propagation of the backward-propagating pump optical signal. A second pump optical signal can be launched in the forward direction to generate a second Brillouin laser oscillation.

A hybrid fiber rod includes a fiber core and inner and outer cladding layers. The core is doped with an active element. The inner cladding layer surrounds the core, and has a refractive index substantially equal to that of the core. The outer cladding layer surrounds the inner cladding layer, and has a refractive index less than that of the core and inner cladding layer. The core length is about 30 to 2000 times the core diameter. A hybrid fiber rod laser system includes an oscillator laser, modulating device, the rod, and pump laser diode(s) energizing the rod from opposite ends. The rod acts as a waveguide for pump radiation but allows for free-space propagation of laser radiation. The rod may be used in a laser resonator. The core length is less than about twice the Rayleigh range. Degradation from single-mode to multi-mode beam propagation is thus avoided.

Furthermore, at room temperature and with no other external stresses on the device, the immobilized portion of the optical fibre (101) is maintained in a compressive state by the tubular structure, the compressive state being such that the relative deformation of the optical fibre is negative or zero in its portion immobilized in the tubular structure, the maximum value of the relative deformation of the immobilized portion of the optical fibre being higher in absolute value than 0.3%.

The invention is optical configurations for constructing laser oscillators or laser amplifiers that comprise an extremely short fiber (typically tens of cm long or below, e.g. 5 cm to 30 cm). In order to overcome the absorption limitation due to the very short length of the fiber, the present invention employs a multi pump-pass scheme for pump light confinement. This scheme is based on the small angular overlap between the lasing and pump beams. The multi pump-pass method of the invention leads to efficient fiber laser oscillators and amplifiers having pulse duration of a few ns, with high average and peak power output that is comparable to the state-of-the-art solid state lasers.

Apparatus and methods for anisotropic pumping of a Kerr lens modelocked laser. Direct diode laser pumping of an ultrafast Kerr lens modelocked laser oscillator is accomplished. Diode lasers generate severely anisotropic beams, meaning the pump beam has a higher-beam-quality dimension and a lower-beam-quality dimension. By spatially overlap of the pump beam higher-beam-quality dimension and the KLM laser mode, KLM operation is accomplished. Multiple laser diode pump beams are combined in counterpropagating and same-side configurations.
