The variable inductor comprises a primary inductor coupled to the VCO to produce a magnetic field based upon a current flowing through the primary inductor and a secondary inductor magnetically coupled to the primary inductor, the secondary inductor to affect the magnitude of the effective inductance of the primary inductor.

Certain aspects of the present disclosure generally relate to voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) using a lowered or an adjustable negative transconductance (−gm) compared to conventional VCOs. This −gm degeneration technique suppresses the noise injected into an inductor-capacitor (LC) tank of the VCO, thereby providing lower signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for a given VCO voltage swing, lower power consumption, and decreased phase noise. One example VCO generally includes a resonant tank circuit, an active negative transconductance circuit connected with the resonant tank circuit, and a bias current circuit for sourcing or sinking a bias current through the resonant tank circuit and the active negative transconductance circuit to generate an oscillating signal. The active negative transconductance circuit includes cross-coupled transistors and an impedance connected between the cross-coupled transistors and a reference voltage.

Each reactance module comprises one or more reactance unit cells, and each reactance unit cell comprises a reactance element coupled in series to a switching element. In exemplary embodiments, the reactance element is a capacitor having a predetermined unit of capacitance, and the switching element is a transistor having a predetermined resistance when in an off state. The ratio of capacitance to resistance is substantially constant for all reactance modules of the plurality of reactance modules.

An inductance-switchable dual-band voltage-controlled oscillation circuit is proposed, which is designed for integration to a high-frequency signal processing system, such as an ultra-wideband (UWB) circuit system, for providing a dual-band voltage-controlled oscillating signal generating function. The proposed voltage-controlled oscillation circuit is characterized by the use of a switchable inductance circuit architecture in lieu of a switchable capacitive circuit architecture for integration to a fixed-inductance circuit architecture to constitute a variable-inductance LC tuning circuit architecture that allows the provision of a dual-band oscillating signal generating function. Further, a current mirror circuit module is used to maintain the quality factor of the LC tuning circuit in both operating modes; a buffer-stage circuit architecture is used to achieve low power consumption, low phase noise, and broad tuning range.

A programmable capacitor bank includes multiple tuning elements. Each tuning element includes two tuning capacitors and a pass transistor that electrically connects or disconnects the capacitors to/from common nodes. For a thermometer decoded capacitor bank, the tuning capacitors for all tuning elements have equal capacitance. Each tuning element further includes at least one pull-up transistor that provides high bias voltage for the pass transistor and at least one pull-down transistor that provides low bias voltage for the pass transistor. The multiple tuning elements may be arranged in a ladder topology such that (1) the tuning elements are turned on in sequential order starting from one end of the ladder and going toward the other end of the ladder and (2) each tuning element receives biasing from a preceding tuning element and provides biasing to a succeeding tuning element. The capacitor bank may be used for VCOs and other circuits.
