Abstract:
A voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) having an LC tank circuit with a variable inductance is disclosed. In one embodiment, the VCO includes a capacitance, at least a portion of which is variable and responsive to a first tuning voltage. The VCO further includes a transformer having first (primary) and second (secondary) windings. The primary winding is coupled to the capacitance, and provides the inductance of the LC tank circuit. The secondary winding is coupled to a current control circuit. The current control circuit may vary the induced current through the secondary winding. By varying the induced current through the secondary winding, the effective inductance of the primary winding may also be varied. Accordingly, the VCO may be tuned by varying the inductance of the LC tank circuit, as well as by varying the capacitance of the same.

There are provided a variable inductor with little degradation in quality factor, and an oscillator and a communication system using the variable inductor. An inductance controller comprising a reactance device with a variable device value, such as, for example, a variable capacitor, is connected to a secondary inductor, magnetically coupled to a primary inductor through mutual inductance. The inductance controller is provided with an inductance control terminal for receiving a control signal for controlling capacitance of the variable capacitor. Inductance of the primary inductor is varied by varying the capacitance by the control signal.

A high-Q precision integrated reversibly trimmable singleband oscillator and tunable multiband oscillator are presented that overcome the problems laser trimming and solid state switches. This is accomplished using micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) technology to integrate an amplifier and its tunable LC network on a common substrate. The LC network can be configured to provide a very narrow bandwidth frequency response which peaks at one or more very specific predetermined frequencies without de-Qing the oscillator.
Abstract:
A method and system in an integrated circuit for frequency tuning oscillator circuits. An oscillator circuit within an integrated circuit is formed on a substrate such that the oscillator circuit is coupled to an inductor component. The inductor component includes a first inductor positioned parallel to a second inductor such that a total effective inductance is associated with the first and second inductors. The first inductor is formed from a first spiral coil layer which is coupled to a second spiral coil layer on the substrate. The second inductor is formed of a single spiral coil layer on the substrate, wherein the single spiral coil layer provides an inductive feedback signal to the oscillator circuit when electrical current flows through the single spiral coil layer in response to current flowing through the first spiral coil layer and the second spiral coil layer. The feedback signal can be adjusted such that a change in a phase associated with the feedback signal results in an alteration of the total effective inductance, which in turn shifts a center frequency associated with the oscillator circuit thereby promoting frequency tuning of the oscillator circuit over a wide tuning range. In addition, a capacitor component can be connected to the oscillator circuit such that the capacitor component includes two series connected capacitors which have an associated effective capacitance. A change in the effective capacitance also results in a shift in the center frequency.

Methods and systems for VCO impedance control to optimize performance, efficiency, and power consumption are disclosed and may include selectively coupling one of a plurality of taps on a multi-tap inductive load to a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) on a chip comprising a plurality of transmitters and receivers. The multi-tap inductive load may comprise a multi-tap transformer or transmission line, which may be integrated on the chip, or may be integrated on a package to which the chip is coupled. A voltage swing at an output of the VCO and/or a current in the VCO may be adjusted by configuring a load of the VCO utilizing the multi-tap inductive load. The multi-tap inductive load may be coupled to the VCO utilizing one or more CMOS switches.

A continuously tunable inductor with an inductive-capacitive (LC) voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) having a primary coil. The inductor includes a separate isolated secondary coil, a set of transistors composing a closed loop with the secondary coil, a magnetic coupling between the primary coil of the LC VCO and the secondary coil, an electrical coupling between the LC VCO and the set of transistors composing a closed loop with the secondary coil, and means for electric current injection into the closed loop. Such an inductor can be tuned by modulating a mutual inductance, which is magnetically and electrically coupled with the LC VCO by injection of an electric current (I0).
