The invention dispenses with calibration of the optical frequency of the light source and permits the use of many codes without increasing the transmission bandwidth used. The optical intensity-frequency characteristic of an n-th optical code signal is set to Cn(f)=(1+cos(2πsf/FSR+rπ/2))/2 (where s is an integer in the range from 1 to maximum number of codes/2, and r=0 or 1) to provide orthogonality between the optical code signals. A system for bidirectional communication of digital data between a central unit and a remote unit wherein the need for tracking loops in the central unit has been eliminated. The central unit transmitter generates a master carrier and a master clock signal which are used to transmit downstream data to the remote units. The remote units recover the master carrier and master clock and synchronize local oscillators in each remote unit to these master carrier and master clock signals to generate reference carrier and clock signals for use by the remote unit receiver. These reference carrier and clock signals are also used by the remote unit transmitters to transmit upstream data to the central unit. The central unit receiver detects the phase difference between the reference carrier and clock signals from the remote units periodically and adjusts the phase of the master carrier and master clock signals for use by the central unit receiver to receive the upstream data.

In particular, a PON employing a multi-carrier CDMA in which a CDMA method is applied for an upstream signal is provided. The PON employing a multi-carrier CDMA includes: optical network terminals (ONTs) for transmitting CDMA-based data using multiple carriers to an optical line terminal (OLT) and for receiving Ethernet-based data transmitted from the OLT; the OLT for transforming CDMA-based data received from the ONT into Ethernet-based data, for transmitting the Ethernet-based data to a higher network, and for transmitting Ethernet-based date to the ONTs; and an optical coupler for coupling CDMA-based optical signals transmitted from the ONTs, for transmitting the coupled optical signal to the OLT, and for distributing an Ethernet-based optical signal transmitted from the OLT to the ONTs.

An orthogonal pilot tone servo controller provides a servo control loop for each tap in a delay line processor where each servo acquires its independence from the other tap's servos utilizing an orthogonal code set modulated on top of the existing tap values. The orthogonal codes are attenuated in amplitude such that the code sets are transparent to the processed signals of interest, but the code's length enables each tap's servo controller to independently recover the tap's state from the aggregate of signals and codes through processing gain realized in each loop's recovery circuit. A plurality of taps can be thus be servo controlled simultaneously, providing for extremely wide bandwidth processes which can be performed accurately with digital controls.
