A device for a light detection system includes an electroluminescent layer stack on a transparent member, such as a glass substrate, with at least one layer of the layer stack being patterned to define first and second electroluminescent regions spaced apart by a transparent light collection path for passage of backreflected light. The layer stack includes first and second electrode layers on opposed sides of one or more active layers. In one embodiment, the second electrode layer is the only layer that is patterned to define the light collection path. In this embodiment, the other layers extend continuously across the light collection path. In another embodiment, all of the layers are patterned to form a gap between the first and second electroluminescent regions. The layer stack is hermetically sealed to protect the active layer or layers from atmosphere-induced degradation. An illumination collector is aligned with the light collection path to receive light that is backreflected from a surface of interest through the light collection path. The illumination collector may be an optical arrangement, a photodetector, or both. In the preferred embodiment, the electroluminescent layer stack is an organic light-emitting source.

The present invention is directed to optical imaging systems which utilize linear lens arrays and particularly gradient index lens arrays as the means for projecting light images onto a photosensitive image member. Exposure modulation at the image plane is reduced by oscillating the lens array during an exposure interval, the oscillating period and excursion distance being dependent upon the type of imaging environment the lens is used in. For document copying applications, the requirement for a two-row array to provide minimum exposure modulation is reduced so that a one-row lens array is enabled. For printer and RIS scanning functions, oscillation of a two-row array enables improved system efficiency and hence greater image irradiance and exposure.

There is a problem that the contact-type image sensor, for adoption in an image input/output apparatus to input/output the image of a large-sized document, such as A0 or A1 size, is weak in lengthwise rigidity and readily deflected at its lengthwise center by its own weight. Accordingly, by attaching a deformation rectifier to the image sensor in a lengthwise direction thereof, the contact type image sensor is reinforced in lengthwise rigidity. The deformation rectifier reinforces the rigidity of the contact type image sensor, thereby preventing the contact type image sensor from deflecting vertically relative to its lengthwise direction and keeping constant the focal length between the surface of the document to be read and the sensor IC.

A lens array 4 is formed as an erect 1:1 imaging lens by superimposing two lens plates 40 and 40 together. Each lens plate 40 consists of a number of micro lenses 41 which are regularly provided at a predetermined pitch and in a two-dimensional manner. This lens plate 40 is for example made by press molding the ultraviolet curing resin in a soft condition using a transparent mold and by irradiating the ultraviolet light on the ultraviolet curing resin from outside for hardening.
