The apparatus utilizes a motorized grinding wheel, said motorized grinding wheel rotating in a direction counter to the rotating elastomer substrate and having an axis of rotation parallel to the axis of rotation of the rotating elastomer substrate, wherein the perpendicular distance between the motorized grinding wheel and the rotating elastomer substrate is adjustable so as to control the amount of elastomer substrate that is removed; and a mount for said motorized grinding wheel, wherein said mount is located proximal to the rotating elastomer substrate that comprises a part of a production line and wherein the mount is capable of traversing parallel to the rotating elastomer substrate.

The preparatory abrasion roller, which is arranged against one surface of the running web, is pressed into an interval between a pair of supporting rollers, which are arranged at a predetermined interval against the other surface of the web. Consequently, the surface of the web is finely abraded in contact with a relatively large area on the surface of the preparatory abrasion roller in the state wherein the web laps with the part of the preparatory abrasion roller.

Novel, composited silica catalyst supports suitable for commercial utilization, which may typically have an average pore diameter in the range of about 100 to about 5000 Angstroms, an advantageously high surface area in the range of about 20 to about 125 square meters per gram and a bulk density in the range of about 0.3 to about 0.6 gram per cubic centimeter, are made by mixing amorphous silica powder having an average particle size in the range of about 10 to about 50 millimicrons with a medium suitable for binding the silica powder. The mixture of silica powder and binder is formed into suitable, macrosized catalyst support shapes by press molding, extrusion, tableting and like forming means. The shaped mixtue of silica powder and binder is calcined to form the novel silica catalyst supports.

The device includes, on each strip side, a plurality of hard component bearing carriages having each a defined width stroke and arranged according to at least three different locations respectively associated with three separate rails including drive and control systems.

In an oxide superconductor comprising a tapelike substrate, an intermediate layer formed on the tapelike substrate, and an oxide superconducting thin film layer formed on the intermediate layer, the method for polishing a surface to be polished of the tapelike substrate comprises a step for polishing the surface to be polished while traveling the tapelike substrate continuously, wherein an initial polishing step and a finish polishing step are included. Ultimately, the average surface roughness Ra of the polished surface is 2 nanometer or less and the in-plane orientation Δφ is 5° or less.
