Composite fibers and methods of manufacturing composite fibers for the reinforcement of concrete are provided. The composite fibers include fibers and a polymeric coating. The composite fibers have a length of about 10 mm to about 80 mm and an equivalent diameter from about 0.3 mm to about 2 mm. A method for reinforcing concrete using the composite fibers is further provided.

A cementitious product and production method wherein the product comprises cement with reinforcing glass fibres therein which are coated with a composition which consists essentially of a protective material to reduce deterioration of the glass fibres, the material being a monocyclic or polycyclic aromatic compound which has at least three hydroxyl groups on the aromatic ring, or when a polycyclic compound is employed, on at least one of the aromatic rings. Preferably, the aromatic compound is soluble in a calcium hydroxide solution, and a preferred such compound is pyrogallol. The composition can also contain a film-forming agent such as a polyvinyl acetate of cationic character or a polyethylene glycol of non-ionic character, as well as a linking agent such as a silane.

The invention includes a method for constructing buildings using non-wood construction products and buildings constructed from such non-wood construction products. The invention further includes a method and apparatus for manufacturing high-performance fiber-reinforced cellular concrete (HPFRCC) products and the use of such products as replacements for conventional wood lumber construction products. The products of the invention have the necessary strength, durability, nailability, and sawability for direct substitution for dimensional wood lumber in wood-frame construction applications. The invention also includes externally reinforced retaining wall systems that include stackable blocks formed of fiber-reinforced cellular concrete.
