Novel compositions, useful as additives to lubricants, are produced by reaction of various reagents with novel polyisobutylene oligimers containing at least one pair of maximally crowded geminal methyl groups. For example, ozonolysis of the novel polyisobutylenes can produce oxygenated derivatives (ketones, esters, alcohols, etc.) which are useful as components of traction fluids. One such alcohol is 1,1,3,3,5,5,7,7-octamethyl-1-octanol, which has been identified by its NMR spectrum and that of its complex with Eu(DPM).sub.3. Other novel compounds are 4,4,6,6,8,8-hexamethyl-2-nonanone and 2,2,6,6,8,8-hexamethyl-4-nonanone.

A process for the preparation of liquid ketones which comprises coupling a saturated aldehyde, e.g., acetaldehyde, with an alphaolefin, e.g., ethylene, in the presence of an organic hydroperoxide initiator and a metal-containing compound as the catalyst therefor, e.g., cobalt(II) acetylacetonate. The novel process results in good productivities and high initiator efficiencies.

In principle all aliphatic and cycloaliphatic ketones can be nitrated according to the invention. Examples are diethyl ketone, cyclohexanone and cyclododecanone.

There is disclosed an azeotropic distillation process for separating toluene from methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) in a spent liquor mixture. A toluene azeotrope former, preferably methanol, is added to the liquor in an amount sufficient to form an azeotrope with all of the toluene present in the mixture. The methanol is added in an amount of at least about 2.62, typically an excess amount of about 3.4 to about 6.3 parts by weight of methanol per 1.0 part by weight of toluene. The resulting azeotrope of methanol and toluene is then separated by distillation from the MIBK. The methanol may be subsequently recovered from the toluene by extraction with water. Other toluene azeotrope formers may be utilized.
