A NEW FILM FORMING AND DRYING COMPOSITION OF MATTER HAS BEEN PREPARED COMPRISING AN EMULSION CONTAINING THERMOPLASTIC POLYMERIC RESIN, A SOLVENT FOR SAID RESIN, AN EMULSIFYING AGENT AND MICRODROPLETS OF WATER CONTAINING TIO2 PIGMENT PARTICLES, SAID COMPOSITION CAPABLE OF FORMING MICROVOIDS OF AIR UPON DRYING. IN THE DRIED FILM THE TIO2 PIGMENT PARTICLES ARE PRESENT IN THE MICROVOIDS IN AN AMOUNT OF FROM 0.4% TO 15% BY VOLUME OF THE TOTAL VOLUME OF THE MICROVOIDS. THE MICROVOIDS HAVE A DIAMETER OF FROM 0.1U TO 1.0U AND A TOTAL MICROVOID VOLUUME OF FROM 55% TO 75% OF THE TOTAL VOLUME OF THE DRIED FILM.

The membranes of the invention find particular utility in separation of solutes from solutions by osmosis or reverse osmosis.

Spheroidal shaped, hollow microcapsules of thermoplastic polymeric resins have been prepared which have an average diameter of from 0.1 Mu to 1.0 Mu . Each of the microcapsules are filled with air and have an average wall thickness of from about 3 percent to 30 percent of the diameter of the microcapsules. These microcapsules are obtained from an emulsion comprising water and microcapsules of the polymeric resin containing a nonsolvent for the resin. The microcapsules are suspended in the water and the non-solvent is present inside the microcapsules. Either one of these products, i.e. the microcapsules themselves or the water emulsion containing the microcapsules described above, may be used as an opacifier in paint or other systems.

THE FILM IS MADE BY CASTING A SOLUTION CONTAINING TOW CELLULOSE DERIVATIVES, EACH HAVING AN ACETATE LINKAGE, A PLASTICIZER AND WATER, AND DRYING IN TWO STAGES, FIRST AT FROM 15* TO 45*C., AND SECONDLY AT FROM 80* TO 120*C. CONTROL OF PORE SIZE IS EFFECTED BY VARYING TYPE AND AMOUNT OF PLASTICIZER WHICH IS A SINGLE OR OR MIXTURE OF GLYCERINE DERIVATIVE, GLYCOL DERIVATIVE AND ORGANIC PHOSPHATE PLASTICIZERS.

The use of a small amount of a salicylate dissolved in cellulose ester dopes has been found to result in the stabilization of such dopes to a significant extent against the undesired formation of amber or brownish-red insoluble globules in the dope.
