The preparation of allylated poly(vinyl chloride) by utilizing an allyltrialkylsilane in the presence of Friedel-Crafts acids is disclosed. The pendant allyl groups can be further reacted through various functionalization reactions to contain end groups such as epoxy and hydroxyl. Alternatively, an unsaturated group can be added to poly(vinyl chloride) utilizing a diene also in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts acid. These pendant groups can also be reacted to contain functional end groups such as hydroxyl and epoxy. In yet a further embodiment, the functionalized end groups such as pendant —OH groups of both the allylated and diene grafted poly(vinyl chloride) are further reacted with other monomers or polymer chains which thus results in a poly(vinyl chloride) chain having pendant monomers or polymers. These compositions are useful as compatibilizers for poly(vinyl chloride) and various other resins.

For examples such polymers which have reactive groups are toughened by mixing with a rubbery material which has complimentary reactive groups, or polymers containing repeat units derived from &agr;-methylenelact(ones)(ams) are toughened by mixing with polymeric core-shell particles having an elastomeric core and a specified thermoplastic shell. The properties of thermoplastics are also improved by blending with &agr;-methylenelact(ones)(ams) such as &agr;-methylenebutyrolactones containing (co)polymers.

A latex which forms a film by evaporation at a temperature of less than 40° C. is based on hydrophobic polymer particles having a core/shell structure. The particles consist of 70 to 90% by weight of at least one polymer with a soft character having a glass transition temperature of less than 20° C. forming the core, and 10 to 30% by weight of at least one polymer with a hard character having a glass transition temperature of greater than 50° C. forming the shell. When applied to any surface and after drying at low temperature, the latex, without the use of any coalescents or volatile organic compounds, provides a continuous film which is homogeneous, has no surface tack and has good mechanical integrity.

Modified polymers, particularly polyolefins with improved flow over that of polyolefin alone, are produced by reacting polypropylene, maleic anhydride monomer, and a peroxy initiator in a twin-screw extruder. The maleic anhydride monomer is injected as a fluid and is grafted onto the base polypropylene during the degradation/chain scissioning process. Novel, highly-grafted polymers with high melt flow and other useful properties are produced in pellet form.
