A carbon-carbon composite material is made by providing an open-celled carbon foam preform, and densifying the preform with carbonaceous material. The open-celled carbon foam preform may be oxygen stabilized prior to carbonization, and the foam preform densified by CVD, HIP, PIC, VPI, pitch and resin injection, or any combination thereof. The carbon-carbon composite material can be heat treated to provide thermal management materials, structural materials, or a friction material for use in a brake or clutch mechanism.

A material having improved hardness characteristics and bearing, lower friction coefficient and increased service life in clusters of sliding friction contains powder of copper, iron, phosphorus, graphite, dust of disulphide of molybdenum and steel substrate made out of low carbohydrate steel. The material has a bimetal structure with granules inserted in a matrix. The material of the invention is especially useful in the machine-building industry, particularly for the production of blocks for units of sliding friction in machines, mechanisms and equipment.

The present invention relates to a carbonaceous composite material that can fully produce the characteristic effect of the graphite fluoride containing carbonaceous composite material with a minimum additive ratio of graphite fluoride and simultaneously can produce the secondary corrosion inhibiting properties and to a sliding member using the same. The carbonaceous composite material of the present invention features in that it contains graphite fluoride; and alkaline agent for neutralization of hydrogen fluoride or adsorbent for fixation of hydrogen fluoride, the remainder being carbonaceous components. The sliding member of the invention is the one made by using the carbonaceous composite material of the invention. Specifically, the carbonaceous composite material of the invention is applicable to an electric sliding brush, a mechanical sealing member, a bearing member and the like.

A process for the synthesis of carbon coatings on the surface of metal carbides, preferably SiC, by etching in a halogen-containing gaseous etchant, and optionally hydrogen gas, leading to (he formation of a carbon layer on the metal carbide. The reaction is performed in gas mixtures containing about 0% (trace) amounts to 100% halogen-containing gaseous etchant, e.g., Cl2, and about 0% to 99.9% H2 (hydrogen gas) at temperatures from about 100° C. to about 4,000° C., preferably about 800° C. to about 1,200° C., over any time range, maintaining a pressure of preferably about one atmosphere, to about 100 atmospheres.
