Energy-saving lamps contain a gas filling of mercury vapor and argon in a gas discharge bulb. Amalgam spheres are used for filling the gas discharge bulb with mercury. A tin amalgam having a high proportion by weight of mercury in the range from 30 to 70% by weight is proposed. Owing to the high mercury content, the amalgam spheres have liquid amalgam phases on the surface. Coating of the spheres with a tin or tin alloy powder converts the liquid amalgam phases on the surface into a solid amalgam having a high tin content. This prevents conglutination of the amalgam spheres during storage and processing.

The present invention deals with the serious pollution problems from electric power plants that burn coal which may be forced to shut down by virtue of their being uneconomical to be retrofitted with expensive pollution controls. The pollutants from coal-burning power stations comprise SO2, NOx, Hg, Particulate Matter, Ash, and CO2. This invention offers a unique and comprehensive solution that makes possible the prevention of the ill-effects currently caused to health and environment while at the same time would also prevent the closure of these badly needed power generation facilities that provide some 50% of the electricity generated in this country. The herein comprehensive solution converts the six mentioned pollutants into valuable products and thus avoids the discharge of such pollutants into the atmosphere.

A high lead solder exhibiting improved wettability to metal substrates, an advantageously controlled melting range, and excellent thermal fatigue properties. It comprises about 98-100% lead and a minor amount, typically about 0.0005-0.1 wt %, based on the total weight of the solder composition, of an alkali metal selected from the group consisting of Na, K, and Li. Additional embodiments additionally comprise an amount of a grain-size controlling additive, e.g., 0.001-0.5 wt % (based on the total weight of all the components in the solder composition) selected from the group consisting of Ce, Ba, La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Th, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Y, Lu, Sc, Mg, Na, Se, Te, oxides thereof and mixtures thereof, in amount effective to control the Pb grain size; and 0-1 wt % of an element selected from the group consisting of Sn, In, Bi, Sb, Ag, Au, and Ga, and mixtures thereof.

A device for dispensing ingredients, such as the ingredients for a dental amalgam, has a handle portion and a head portion formed of mating parts with the handle angulated to the head and formed for convenient gripping by the user's hand. A slide mounted in the head slides laterally when pushed by the user's thumb to transport measured ingredients to a common aperture for delivery into a container. The container, when put in place, releases a latch that holds the slide normally in measuring position and prevents transport of the ingredients unless the container is in position to catch them.Adjustment of a measuring chamber for liquid mercury, to accurately proportion it, is by a valve having an end projecting, more or less, into a chamber, so as to vary the volume of the chamber. The position of the valve is controlled by a rectilinearly movable cam whose position may be fixed by a lock nut which normally is inaccessible in a recess in the head portion.

Aluminum-magnesium alloys which contain from 50 to 98.6 percent by weight of aluminum may be prepared by adding oxide-free aluminum to a magnesium amalgam to form a binary amalgam which is then heated to a temperature sufficient to distill the mercury therefrom. This leaves as a distillation residue the alloys of the invention. The distillation is conducted under conditions of agitation and in the presence of an oxygen-free gas which is incapable of reacting with either aluminum, magnesium, mercury or combinations thereof. The aluminum-magnesium alloys produced by the process of the invention which contain from 50 to 70 percent by weight of aluminum are particularly useful in producing wellknown commercial aluminum alloys which contain 1.4 to 5 percent magnesium.
