Abstract: Disclosed is an end assembly for use in a unipolar filter press electrolyser, where the unipolar filter press electrolyser has a filter press stack. The end assembly of the unipolar filter press electrolyser includes an end plate component having two apertures, the two apertures being alignable with channels formed in the filter press stack. The two apertures include a first aperture configured to receive a stream of liquid electrolyte and gases from the filter press stack, and a second aperture configured to receive a stream of recirculated liquid electrolyte. In addition, the end assembly includes an end clamp configured to apply a clamping force on the end plate component to securely retain the filter press stack. The end clamp includes one gas offtake port to extract gases from the stream of liquid electrolyte and gases from the first aperture and discharge the gases out of the unipolar filter press electrolyser.

Abstract: A novel electrochemical cell for extraction of lithium chloride from brines and release of pure lithium metal is disclosed, wherein the cell is composed of two porous electrodes positioned inside a housing with a narrow gap between them and preferably a third recovery electrode. The working electrode is impregnated with a compound that selectively binds lithium ions such as various manganese oxide and Prussian Blue analogs. The counter electrode is impregnated with a compound that binds chlorine ions such as silver and polypyrrole. Brine is pumped through the charged electrodes and lithium ions selectively bind to the working electrode and chlorine ions bind to the counter electrode while the majority of other salts pass through. When the working electrode is fully loaded, the brine is replaced with a polar organic solvent and the voltage increased to release the chlorine ions from the counter electrode as chlorine gas. Then the polarity of the electrodes is reversed between the capture electrode and the recovery electrode, and the lithium ions are released into the solvent. The solvent with the insoluble lithium ions is collected in an inert tank and the solvent is drained and evaporated, leaving dry pure lithium metal precipitate. This precipitate is melted, drained into an inert canister, and solidified as pure lithium metal ready for use.

Abstract: A hydrogen system includes: a water electrolysis apparatus including a water electrolysis cell; an electrochemical hydrogen pump that increases the pressure of hydrogen-containing gas produced by the water electrolysis apparatus; a gas flow path that supplies the hydrogen-containing gas produced by the water electrolysis apparatus to the electrochemical hydrogen pump; and a first flow path through which a first heat medium that is a liquid and has collected waste heat of the water electrolysis cell flows. The electrochemical hydrogen pump is capable of performing heat exchange with the first heat medium having collected waste heat of the water electrolysis cell.

Abstract: An environment control system utilizes oxygen and humidity control devices that are coupled with an enclosure to independently control the oxygen concentration and the humidity level within the enclosure. An oxygen depletion device may be an oxygen depletion electrolyzer cell that reacts with oxygen within the cell and produces water through electrochemical reactions. A desiccating device may be g, a dehumidification electrolyzer cell, a desiccator, a membrane desiccator or a condenser. A controller may control the amount of voltage and/or current provided to the oxygen depletion electrolyzer cell and therefore the rate of oxygen reduction and may control the amount of voltage and/or current provided to the dehumidification electrolyzer cell and therefore the rate of humidity reduction. The oxygen level may be determined by the measurement of voltage and a limiting current of the oxygen depletion electrolyzer cell. The enclosure may be a food or artifact enclosure.

Abstract: Disclosed is a combined electrical current carrier, circulation chamber and frame (CCF) formed as a single or double part (CCF) for use in unipolar electrochemical devices, such as a filter press electrolyser apparatus. The CCF is structured to define an internal circulation chamber for circulation of electrolyte, products, and reactants as well as apertures which form flow passageways when the filter press device is assembled. Affixed on opposed surfaces of the CCFs are electrically conductive planar electroactive structures which are in electrical contact with the CCF. The circulation chamber is formed by the depth of the CCF itself between opposing electroactive structures. Multiple CCFs are assembled and compressed together to form the filter press electrolyser apparatus. The flow passageway apertures within the assembled filter press electrolyser are aligned to form flow pathways, located above and below the circulation chambers. Reactants and electrolyte are input along the bottom flow pathways. When power is applied to the CCFs and electroactive structures, the reactants, once they flow into the circulation chamber with the electrolyte, undergo redox reactions to produce the products which are then collected and exit the electrolyser in the upper flow pathways.
