A hemispherical detector comprising a plurality of photodetectors arranged in a substantially contiguous array, the array being substantially in the shape of a half-sphere, the half-sphere defining a closed end and an open end, the open end defining a substantially circular face. Also provided is a method for constructing a hemispherical detector comprising the steps of making a press mold of the desired shape of the hemispherical detector, pouring a material into the press mold to form a cast, finishing the cast to remove any defects, coating the cast with a coating material, and attaching a plurality of photodetectors to the cast.

There is provided a radiation solid state reader having a phosphor absorbing radiation and emitting light and a plurality of pixels arranged in a two-dimensional matrix. Each of the pixels has a photoelectric conversion element for receiving the emitted light and for generating charge and a reading transistor for reading signal from the photoelectric conversion element. The photoelectric conversion element is disposed between the phosphor and the reading transistor. There is also provided a radiation solid state reader having a plurality of pixels arranged in a two dimensional matrix for reading a signal from a direct conversion type sensor absorbing radiation and generating charge. Each of the pixels includes an amplifying circuit for amplifying a signal from the direct conversion type sensor.

The present invention may provide a particle or radiation detector or imager which may be used for accurate recording of medical (2-D) X-ray images. The imager includes at least one detector panel. The detector panel includes a microgap detector with an array of pixel electrodes of a novel form. Each pixel electrode is insulated from a planar cathode by means of an insulating layer. Each pixel electrode is connected to an underlying contact by means of a via hole in the insulating layer. The insulating layer is preferably conformal with the electrodes. The underlying contact is connected to an electronic measuring element which preferably lies underneath the electrode and is about the same size as the electrode. The measuring element may be a storage device, a digital counter or similar. A switching transistor is connected to the measuring device. The switching transistor may be a thin film transistor. Alternatively, both measuring element and transistor may be formed in a single crystal semiconductor, e.g. a VLSI, and a complete imager formed from several detector panels in an array. The drift electrode of the microgap detector preferably includes a photocathode. The photocathode may be directly evaporated onto a phosphor.

A detection apparatus for detecting an electron cloud includes a resistive anode layer with a detection plane upon which the electron cloud is incident. The resistive layer is capacitively coupled to a readout structure having a conductive grid parallel to the detection plane. Charge on the resistive layer induces a charge on the readout structure, and currents in the grid. The location of the induced charge on the readout structure corresponds to the location on the detection plane at which the electron cloud is incident. Typically, the detection apparatus is part of a detector, such as a gas avalanche detector, in which the electron cloud is formed by conversion of a high-energy photon or particle to electrons that undergo avalanche multiplication. The spacing between the anode layer and the readout structure is selected so that the width of the charge distribution matches the pitch between conductive segments of the grid. The resistivity of the anode layer is selected to be low enough to support the highest bandwidth of the readout electronics, but high enough to allow penetration of the charge through the anode layer to the readout structure.
