The sensing platform employs a solid-state electrolyte three-electrode cell, creating a high ionic strength environment within the solid-state electrolyte membrane, which is in ion exchange equilibria with the sampled solution. This device may be used as a standalone sensor in environments where the water parameters (pH temperature, and ionic strength) are controlled, or in concert with compensation sensors where water parameters are not controlled.

A method may comprise scanning the sensor (10) for the first time using CV to generate a reference set of readings; scanning the sensor (10) for the second time after the sensor (10) has been employed; comparing a second set of readings from the second CV scan to the reference set of readings; when the second set of readings is different from the reference set of readings, determining that the sensor (10) potential has shifted; scanning the sensor (10) for the third time to clean one or more elements of the sensor (10); scanning the sensor (10) for the fourth time; comparing a fourth set of readings from the fourth CV scan to the second set of readings; and determining that the potential of the sensor (10) has shifted due to pollution of the sensor (10), and/or that the sensor (10) can be further cleaned.

This disclosure provides techniques for extending useful life of a reference electrode, as well as a novel voltametric system and measurement cell design and related chemistries. An automated, repeatable-use system features a reference electrode that directly immerses a metallic conductor into an analyte, with electrolytes (e.g., chlorides) used for measurement being separately added and removed for each measurement cycles; the metallic conductor can optionally be left exposed to clean dry air in between measurements. In one implementation, the system can be restricted to application with specific analytes (e.g., ground water) that are known in advance to be free of substances that could degrade reference electrode use or lifetime. Cleaning solutions can optionally be used that would not be practical with conventional (insulated) reference electrode designs. In another embodiment, a measurement cell can be configured to receive separated electrode modules, permitting independent cleaning/removal of the working electrode (or other electrodes).

The salt content analyzer includes three electrodes: a working electrode, a counter electrode and a reference electrode. In operation, the current passing through the electrodes as a sweeping voltage is applied may be analyzed to determine the salt content of the analyte. The working electrode includes an access control mechanism to only expose a fraction of the working length of the working electrode to the outside environment at any given time. The access control mechanism is advanced between tests to expose a fresh portion of the working electrode. Thus, testing may be performed in a serial manner.

A sensor system that measures at least one parameter of water includes an electronics subsystem and includes a sensor housing electrically and mechanically coupled to the electronics subsystem. The sensor housing encloses a chamber that receives water via at least one inlet and that releases water via at least one outlet. At least one sensor has at least one electrode exposed to water in the chamber. A flow generator causes water to flow through the chamber. A plurality of objects within the chamber move in response to the water flow and abrasively clean the at least one electrode. Preferably, the sensor system includes a chlorine sensor having at least two electrodes. The electronics subsystem applies a first differential voltage between the two electrodes during a measurement interval and then applies a second differential voltage between the two electrodes during an interval following the measurement interval.
