Systems and methods are delineated in which dynamic thresholds may be employed to detect and provide alerts for potential conflicts between a vehicle and another vehicle, an object or a person in an aircraft environment. Current systems for airport conflict detection and alerting consider one or more alerting boundaries which are independent of the amount of traffic present at any one time or over the course of time. Because nuisance alerts rates depend to a large extent on the amount of traffic, and because alert detection thresholds are often set based on a desire to limit nuisance alerts to a specific threshold, adapting those thresholds based on, among other things, the amount of traffic can result in earlier alerting in some crash scenarios and can even result in providing an alert in a crash scenario where no alert would have otherwise been generated.

In one aspect, a neural network for autonomous operation of an object in an environment is trained. Policy values are generated based on a sample data set. An approximate action-value function is generated from the policy values. A set of approximated policy values is generated using the approximate action-value function for all states in the sample data set for all possible actions. A training target for the neural network is calculated based on the approximated policy values. A training error is calculated as the difference between the training target and the policy value for the corresponding state-action pair in the sample data set. At least some of the parameters of the neural network are updated to minimize the training error.

A traffic management system determines whether a vehicle is likely to be involved in a collision, based on at least vehicle operation data and the status of traffic lights. If it is determined that a vehicle is likely to be involved in a collision, the traffic management system may issue a notification or warning to the vehicle, e.g., instructing the vehicle to increase or decrease its rate of acceleration, and/or apply its brakes. Where the vehicle does not respond to the notification or warning, the traffic management system may take control of the vehicle, and notify and warn other vehicles and/or systems of its actions. Where the vehicle responds to the notification or warning, the traffic management system may calculate and recommend an insurance benefit.
