Abstract:
An exhaust system for use with a microwave excited ultraviolet lamp system is provided to receive cooling air emitted from the lamp system and to contain and direct the cooling air so as not to contact a substrate being irradiated with ultraviolet light. A lens, such as a quartz lens, is supported by the exhaust duct to transmit the ultraviolet light emitted from the lamp system toward the substrate.

A flexible electroluminescence fiber has an electroluminescence device and electrodes disposed on both sides of the electroluminescence device. The surface of the electroluminescence device, including the electrodes, is covered with a thermoplastic resin, a thermosetting resin or an ultraviolet-curing resin, which is then cured. The resin surface is integrally formed with a function-assisting portion for assisting the function of the electroluminescence fiber to retain the sectional configuration of the electroluminescence fiber and to attain ease of installation on a wall surface or the like and replacement, and ease of electrical connection, and ease of increasing the amount and apparent width of light emitted from the electroluminescence fiber.

Abstract:
One of the objectives of the present invention are to provide smaller, lighter and less expensive structure in a starting device for discharge lamp for car use so as to prevent breakage due to vibrations etc. And another objective is to attain simultaneous electrical and structural connections between a high voltage electrode and a coil of a starting transformer. The device having the following constitution realizes the above-mentioned objectives. A starting device for a discharge lamp comprises a socket equipped with a high voltage electrode and a grounding electrode, a bobbin with a core-less structure, a starting transformer comprising a primary coil and a secondary coil wound around the bobbin. A screw electrode is arranged at the center of the end face of the bobbin. One end of the screw electrode is connected to an output terminal of the high voltage side of the secondary coil on the starting transformer. And the other end of the screw electrode is screwed and connected to a terminal of a high voltage side of the socket.

A self-ballasted fluorescent lamp (10) that comprises a housing (12) formed to contain a ballast. The housing (12) has a top surface (14) with openings (16) leading from the exterior of the housing (12) to the interior. The openings (16) can be in the form of raised bosses having upstanding walls (16a). A restricted portion (18), which can take the form of a flange, is formed with the opening (16) and a safe end-of-life enabling device (20) is positioned in the opening (16) and in contact with the restricted portion (18). The safe end-of-life device (20) is tubular, has low thermal conductivity and in preferred forms of the invention is a glass such as quartz or a ceramic such as aluminum oxide. The ends (22) of a fluorescent lamp (24) penetrate the tubular end-of-life device (20) and extend into the interior of the housing for suitable connection to an enclosed electronic ballast. A retainer (26) is positioned opposite the restricted portion for maintaining the end-of-life device within the opening. The retainer (26) is a typical compact fluorescent cement that is used to fix the lamp to the housing. Alternatively, the retainer can be an adhesive silicone or a threaded washer.
Abstract:
A discharge lamp lighting circuit 1 has a DC power supply circuit 3 for outputting a DC voltage and a DC-AC conversion circuit 4 for converting the output voltage of the DC power supply circuit 3 into an AC voltage and then supplying the AC voltage to a discharge lamp 6. To light the discharge lamp 6, a predetermined period of time over which the polarity of the voltage supplied from the DC-AC conversion circuit 4 to the discharge lamp 6 is defined as either positive or negative and is provided before the discharge lamp 6 is lighted. The voltage polarity is forcibly inverted to limit the duration of the period so as not to exceed the predetermined time. The circuit reduces costs and prevents short life and degradation of a discharge lamp by placing a time limit on the duration of the period over which the supply voltage polarity is temporarily fixed before the discharge lamp is lighted.
