    摘要: A planar resistance heating element with positive temperature coefficient characteristics includes a resistive body layer formed of a crystalline resin containing electrically conductive particles and disposed between at least a pair of electrodes on an insulating substrate. A phenolic resin layer or a denatured phenolic resin layer with an elastomer resin added is disposed on the resistive body layer in covering relation to the entire surface thereof. An insulating protective film of resin may be disposed on the covering layer with an adhesive layer interposed therebetween, and an adhesive layer may be disposed on an outer surface of the insulating protective film for attachment to an object to be heated.

    摘要: A therapeutic heating pad which is not hot to the touch provides substantial infrared radiation to a user. Accordingly it can be used for extended periods without feeling uncomfortable to the skin, while imparting deep therapeutic heat to the user. The heating pad is comprised of a radiant heat generating layer having a plane surface comprising means for radiating heat evenly from its surface, a pair of flexible electrically insulating and radiation permeable layers located adjacent and covering opposite sides of the layer, a thermal insulation layer disposed against and covering one of the electrically insulating layers, a radiation reflective layer disposed against and covering the outside surface of the thermal insulation layer, and a sealed radiation permeable envelope enclosing the entire heater. Preferably the flexible heat generating layer is comprised of a fiber glass mat impregnated with a resistive material, which material provides a surface temperature, when current is conducted therethrough, which is between 60 degrees Celsius and 65 degrees Celsius.

    摘要: A multicolor optical device having at least three optically stable states includes a plurality of pairs of associated light sensors and light sources for emitting light of respectively different colors when activated. Each light source is divided by an opaque wall into a first light emitting portion and a second light emitting portion. The light signals from the first light emitting portions of all light sources are blended to obtain a composite light signal of a variable color. Separate optical feedbacks are established between the second light emitting portions and light sensors in pairs tending to stabilize the light sources in their conditions to thereby maintain the color of the composite light signal.

    摘要: An electrically conductive element comprises a support (perferably a flexible continous polymeric film) and fibrous material (preferably a spun glass fiber web) which is partially embedded in the support and partially protruding therefrom, the protruding fibrous material being part of a conductive layer comprising randomly distributed fibers having conductive material adhered thereto. The element can be prepared from a conductive composition containing conductive particles dispersed in a liquid medium (preferably an aqueous dispersion of carbon particles) by applying said composition to a substrate comprising a support and fibrous material which is partially embedded in one surface of the support and partially protruding therefrom, and then drying to evaporate the liquid medium. The elements are particularly useful as heating elements which comprise electrodes so that current can be passed through the conductive layer.

The heating elements comprise a laminar member composed of a conductive polymer and two laminar electrodes connected directly or indirectly to opposite faces of the laminar member, and there are apertures, for example slits, passing through the thickness of the element so that at least one planar dimension of the element can be changed by changing the shape of the apertures. The apertures through the element facilitate its dimensional change. Preferably the laminar member exhibits PTC characteristics. The heating elements are particularly useful in the form of articles in which the element is attached to a heat-responsive sheet, for example a heat-recoverable polymeric film to cause recovery of the heat-responsive sheet.
