A modified conjugated diene-based polymer having high Mooney viscosity and good shape stability and exhibiting excellent processability and low heat build-up is obtained in as few steps as possible. The modified conjugated diene-based polymer is produced by a method of reacting a conjugated diene-based polymer having an active chain end, obtained by polymerizing a monomer containing a conjugated diene compound in the presence of an initiator that contains at least either of an alkali metal compound and an alkaline earth metal compound, with a compound [M] having at least two groups selected from the group consisting of a group “—C(R1)═N-A1” and a group “—N═C(R1)-A1”, where R1 is a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbyl group and A1 is a monovalent group having an alkoxysilyl group.

In a polymerization process of at least one of monomers selected from the group consisting of conjugated diene compounds such as butadiene and vinylaromatic compounds such as styrene, an organolithium compound such as butyllithium is added to the polymerization system first in the presence of the monomer, and thereafter a secondary amine compound such as saturated cyclic imine is added thereto to produce a soluble initiator by bringing the both compound into contact with each other. Polymerization is carried out with the soluble initiator formed. The obtained high molecular weight polymer is modified with a coupling agent such as tin tetrachloride. The polymer obtained has a high molecular weight, a narrow molecular weight distribution, and controlled molecular weight, and exhibits remarkable coupling property, low hysteresis loss. The process provides a polymer having a consistent characteristic, regardless of production scale and procedures of adding materials.

Organic material, particularly organic material floating on a water surface, can be encapsulated by reacting, in the presence of the organic material, (A) a functionalized liquid polymer containing anhydride functional groups which groups are derived from an alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride and (B) an alkoxylated fatty monoamine or polyamine having from 1.5 to 15 moles of alkoxylate per mole of fatty amine. The functionalized polymer (A) may be, for example, maleinized polybutadiene and the alkoxylated fatty amine may be, for example, N,N.sup.1, N.sup.1 -tris (2-hydroxypropyl)-N-oleyl-1,3-diaminopropane. Preferably, the alkoxylated fatty amine is derived from a fatty amine having an iodine value of at least 65. The method may also be used to encapsulate a solid contaminated with organic material e.g. oil drilling cuttings.
