Inorganic fiber paper includes first biosoluble inorganic fibers having an average fiber diameter of 3 to 7 μm, second biosoluble inorganic fibers having an average fiber diameter of 2 to 3 μm, and a binder, the average fiber diameter of the second biosoluble inorganic fibers being smaller than that of the first biosoluble inorganic fibers.

A mounting member that can sufficiently suppress scattering of inorganic fiber material when a pollution control element is assembled in a casing, and that can maintain sufficiently high contact pressure between the inner surface of the casing and the pollution control element, even after the organic binder has combusted. The mounting member of the present invention is for wrapping and mounting a pollution control element (30) in a casing (20), and provides a mat (1) made from inorganic fiber material, and an aggregated substance (5) containing an organic binder and inorganic fine particles that is impregnated throughout most of the mat (1).

Moisture absorptive and desorptive paper having both high moisture absorptive and desorptive properties and high dimensional stability is provided. Moisture absorptive and desorptive paper comprising organic fine particles having cross-linking structure and 1 to 10 mmol/g of acidic group where not less than 1 mmol/g of metal ion of at least one kind of metal selected from the group consisting of Li, Na, K, Mg and Ca is bonded to said acidic group, inorganic fiber and pulp-shaped fiber. By the basic constitution as above, on one hand the moisture absorptive and desorptive properties inherent to the organic fine particles are efficiently utilized by suppressing the use of binder as much as possible, and on the other hand deformation or thermal shrinking of the paper due to swelling in water at the time of absorption etc. is able to be suppressed.

A non-woven mat of inorganic fiber is disclosed having a substance which is lower at the edges of the mat than in the remainder of the mat. Apparatus for making such a mat includes: a source of a slurry of inorganic fiber in a liquid; a forming wire disposed to move past the source, the liquid passing through the forming wire to deposit the inorganic fiber on the forming wire; a mask across a part of the width of the forming wire to hinder passage of the liquid through the forming wire over the part, the effectiveness of the mask varying in the direction of movement of the forming wire past the slurry source. A method of making the mat includes passing a forming wire past a slurry of inorganic fibers in a liquid while masking a part of the width of the forming wire as it passes through the slurry, the masking varying along the length of the forming wire as it passes through the slurry; and urging the slurry against the forming wire and causing the liquid to pass through the forming wire, whereby a non-woven mat of inorganic fiber is formed having an uneven substance (weight/unit area) in the cross direction.

A flame and heat resistant paper is disclosed having high burnthrough prevention capability, as required in aircraft applications. The paper is prepared from modified aluminum oxide silica fibers, in addition to other components, and has exceptional tensile strength and flexibility as compared to conventional inorganic papers.

The present invention provides a process for producing a fiber reinforced composite which contains the reinforcing fibers uniformly dispersed therein and therefore has uniformity of strength. The process comprises;preparing an aqueous slurry which comprises reinforcing fibers, water-soluble organic polymers A charged in water and particulate organic polymers, adding thereto water-soluble organic polymers B charged opposite to said organic polymers A in water to flocculate the solid components in said aqueous slurry, andthen removing aqueous medium and molding.

A method for producing insulating panels based on mineral fibers and paper fibers is disclosed. The panels are formed by preparing a suspension of mineral fibers, binders and conventional additives in water, forming the insulating panel by applying the slurry on a screen, drying and consolidating the insulating panel. Due to the use of surface active siloxanes, which contain betaine or quaternary groups, a more rapid and better dewatering of the filter residues, which are intended for the drying process, is attained.

A shaped-article for use in producing a fiber-reinforced composite member is formed of short fibers and deformed fibers. The deformed fibers have a plurality of needle-like portions extending from a nucleus portion. The short fibers are orientated at random by dispersing the deformed fibers. The fiber shaped-article is formed by pouring a slurry of the short fibers and deformed fibers dispensed in a liquid into a mold, compressing the slurry and removing the liquid.

Improved inorganic ceramic papers comprising heterogeneous grades of ceramic fibers, namely small, high surface area fibers and at least one larger, lower surface area ceramic fiber are bonded into a matrix with the aid of an inorganic binder system having at least one metal oxide with an average particle size below 200 nm. Multiple different grades of inorganic ceramic fibers and small particle size inorganic binders impart good tensile strength and flexibility characteristics in the same sheet.

Provided is a composite for use as thermal insulation in high temperature environments. The composite comprises a layer of randomly laid and oriented, fine diameter, heat resistant fibers interlocked together into the form of a shape sustaining paper having a high fiber index and two lateral surfaces, said paper being compressed to produce a paper which has a thickness of from about 0.01 to 0.50 inch and a density of about 6 to about 30 lb/cu.ft. A high temperature resistant scrim is disposed upon each of the lateral surfaces of the paper, and a network of abrasion-resistant, high temperature-resistant threads is stitched through the scrim and the paper such that the scrim is mechanically locked to the paper by said threads. The network of threads and the scrim substantially retain the structural integrity of the said paper to maintain said paper in compression.
