Abstract:
A mouthpad for cleaning teeth and oral transmucosal drug delivery has a U-shaped plate sized to cover substantially only the biting surfaces of upper and lower teeth of a human jaw. The plate is positioned between the upper teeth and lower teeth such that when the teeth are rinsed with a liquid, the liquid flows primarily through the crevices between individual teeth and physically detaches the adhering residue within. Alternatively, using fluids containing drugs for rinsing while biting on the plate can deliver drugs through the oral mucosa. A method of cleaning teeth and delivering drugs through oral mucosa using a plate positioned between the upper and lower teeth is also disclosed.
Abstract:
The present invention provides genes that are differentially expressed during neoplasia. These genes and gene products comprise panels for use in screening candidate agents for therapeutic intervention in lung cancers, and for use in therapeutic, prognostic and diagnostic methods and compositions. Therapeutic agents are also provided by the invention. Diagnostic compositions include compositions comprising detection agents for detecting one or more genes that have been shown to be up- or down-regulated in pathogenesis of lung cancer. Exemplary detection agents include nucleic acid probes, which can be in solution or attached to a solid surface, e.g., in the form of a microarray. The invention also provides computer-readable media comprising values of levels of expression of one more genes that are modulated in lung cancer.

The present invention provides methods and compositions for screening, diagnosing and prognosing liver reponse, for monitoring the effectiveness of liver response treatment, and for drug development.
Abstract:
The present invention provides methods and compositions for screening, diagnosis and prognosis of Alzheimer's disease, for monitoring the effectiveness of Alzheimer's disease treatment, and for drug development. Alzheimer's Disease-Associated features (AFs), detectable by two-dimensional electrophoresis of cerebrospinal fluid, serum or plasma are described. The invention further provides Alzheimer's Disease-Associated Protein Isoforms (APIs) detectable in cerebrospinal fluid, serum or plasma, preparations comprising isolated APIs antibodies immunospecific for APIs, pharmaceutical compositions, diagnostic and therapeutic methods, and kits comprising or based on the same.

Systems and methods for rapidly analyzing cell containing samples, for example to identify morphology or to localize and quantitate biomarkers are disclosed.
Abstract:
The properties inside a human tissue as well as how those properties vary over time can include information of great importance to a healthcare provider. For example, the concentration of hemoglobin, oxygenated or nonoxygenated, blood flow velocity, body temperature, and even change in size of the tissue, can all be relevant to a doctor's understanding of how a wound is healing. In some cases, the tissue of interest may not be easily accessible, as a tissue that is under a cast or beneath a bandage, or may be beneath a layer of skin that makes it difficult to evaluate the tissue visually or in a non-invasive manner. Improved systems and methods for evaluating and monitoring tissues are needed. A system for monitoring tissue at a plurality of depths can include a sensor strip, a data acquisition module and analysis software. The sensor strip can have a first side including a first photodetector element and a plurality of light-emitting elements, wherein the plurality of light-emitting elements are disposed in a predetermined configuration relative to the photodetector element. The data acquisition module can be capable of being coupled to the sensor strip, wherein the data acquisition module is configured to control the sensor strip and store signals received from the light-emitting elements. The analysis software can analyze and/or display the received signals. The system can be adapted to be placed on the surface of a patient's skin, e.g., under a cast, splint, or dressing. The sensor strip can be adapted to be placed over an area of a patient's body, e.g., that has suffered trauma.
Abstract:
The invention is directed to methods of using novel Babesia antigen peptides in detecting Babesia spp. in a sample. The methods may be adapted to assays suitable for high blood volume screening, use for clinical diagnosis of patients with babesiosis, or assaying blood contaminated with Babesia spp. , such as B. microti .
Abstract:
An intravascular catheter may include a distal end for insertion and a proximal end. The distal end for insertion may terminate with a tip. It may define at least two openings, of which one is proximal-most in the distal end. The distal tip may include a first radiopaque marker that is discretely positioned at the proximal-most opening and radiographically distinguishes the proximal-most opening from the rest of the distal end. The distal tip may also include a second radiopaque marker that marks the tip.
Abstract:
A method and an apparatus for optically reading test devices having an identification data zone associated with the test device and test zone arranged to receive a sample. The apparatus comprises an optical sensing module, an image processing module coupled to the optical sensing module, a control module coupled to the optical sensing module and to the image-processing module. The optical sensing module is arranged to sense both the test zone and the identification data zone and deliver the sensed data to the image processing module responsive to the control module. Further, the image-processing unit is arranged to perform image processing on the sensed data from the test zone and from the identification data zone and further determine the sample according to the sensed data from the test zone in view of the sensed data from the identification data zone responsive to the control unit.
