Also disclosed is a process for preparing aldehydes with variable normal- to iso-aldehyde ratios comprising contacting an olefin, hydrogen, and carbon monoxide with one or more phosphonite ligands, rhodium, and a hydroformylation solvent. The phosphonite-based catalyst solutions provide the ability to manipulate the normal- to iso-aldehyde ratio by varying one or more process variables including carbon monoxide partial pressure, temperature, and gram moles ligand to gram atoms rhodium.

General formula (I): (R )(R )(R )PH.BAr4 [In the formula, R , R , R , and Ar are the same as in the description.] A) The process is characterized by reacting a phosphine with a) HCl or b) H2SO4 to yield a) a hydrochloric acid salt or b) a sulfuric acid salt and then reacting the salt with a tetraaryl borate compound. B) The compound (I) is characterized in that it has a secondary or tertiary alkyl or the like as R and can be easily handled even in air without necessitating special caution. C) The use is in a transition metal complex catalyst for use in reactions for C-C, C-N, and C-O bond formation, and is characterized in that the compound (I) is used in place of an unstable phosphine compound to produce the same effect.

A method for preparing hydroxyaromatic compounds brominated in the para-position, such as p-bromophenol, is disclosed. The method yields overall high process selectivity through isomeric equilibration and separation of the brominated products, thereby eliminating the need for high para selectivity in the products of catalytic oxybromination reactions of hydroxyaromatic compounds using oxygen, a bromine source, and an acidic medium in the presence of a metal catalyst. Furthermore, the invention provides an efficient method for recycling the metal catalyst, as well as reagents used in the bromination, to further reactions.

The present invention relates to ferroxanes and a method of making wherein a ferroxane may be defined by the general formula [Fe(O)x(OH)y(O2CR)z]n wherein x, y and z may be any integer or fraction such that 2x + y + z = 3 and n may be any integer. The ferroxanes may be doped with at least one other element other than iron. The present invention further relates to a ceramic made from the ferroxanes of the present invention and a method of making. The present invention still further relates to supported and unsupported membranes made from the ceramic of the present invention.
