A method of producing a garnet-type solid electrolyte that contains Li, La, Zr, and O includes a preparation step of preparing a lithium-containing compound, a lanthanum-containing compound, and a zirconium-containing compound; a mixing step of obtaining a mixture by mixing these compounds such that a molar ratio among the elements satisfies Li : La : Zr = a : b : c (where a is from 120 to 160, b is from 1 to 5, and c is from 1 to 5); and a heating step of heating the mixture at from 400 to 1,200°C.

A framework for developing high quality factor (Q) material for electronic applications in the radio frequency range is provided. In one implementation, ceramic materials having a tungsten bronze crystal structure is modified by substituting one or more elements at one or more lattice sites on the crystal structure. The substitute elements are selected based on the ionic radius and other factors. In other implementations, the modified ceramic material is prepared in combination with compositions such as rutile or a perovskite to form a orthorhombic hybrid of perosvkite and tetragonal tungsten bronze.

Processing techniques for forming a textured hexagonal ferrite materials such as Z-phase barium cobalt ferrite Ba3Co2Fe24O41 (Co2Z) to enhance the resonant frequency and other magnetic properties of the material for high frequency applications are provided. The processing techniques include magnetic texturing by using fine grain particles and sintering the material at a lower temperature than conventional firing temperatures to inhibit reduction of iron. The processing techniques also may include aligning M-phase (BaFe12O19 uniaxial magnetization) with non-magnetic additives in a static magnetic field and reacting with BaO source and CoO to form Z-phase (Ba3Me2Fe24O42). In some implementations, processing techniques includes aligning Co2Z phase (planar magnetization) with magnetic texturing occurring in a rotating magnetic field.

Provided are a barium titanate-based piezoelectric ceramics having satisfactory piezoelectric performance and a satisfactory mechanical quality factor (Qm), and a piezoelectric element using the same. Specifically provided are a piezoelectric ceramics, including: crystal particles; and a grain boundary between the crystal particles, in which the crystal particles each include barium titanate having a perovskite-type structure and manganese at 0.04% by mass or more and 0.20% by mass or less in terms of a metal with respect to the barium titanate, and the grain boundary includes at least one compound selected from the group consisting of Ba4Ti12O27 and Ba6Ti17O40, and a piezoelectric element using the same.

In one aspect, the invention includes a reactor apparatus for pyrolyzing a hydrocarbon feedstock, said apparatus including: a reactor component comprising a refractory material in oxide form, the refractory material having a melting point of no less than 20600C and which remains in oxide form when exposed to a gas having carbon partial pressure of 10-22 bar and oxygen partial pressure of 10-10 bar, at a temperature of 12000C; wherein said refractory material has no less than 4 vol% formed porosity, measured at 200C, based upon the bulk volume of said refractory material. In another embodiment, the refractory material has total porosity in the range of from 4 to 60 vol%.
