Abstract:
Described herein are devices, systems, and methods for determining the composition of liquids, including the identity of one or more drugs in the liquid, the concentration of the drug, and the type of diluent using immittance spectroscopy. These devices, systems and methods are particularly useful for describing the identity and, in some variations, concentration of one or more components of a medical liquid such as intravenous fluid. In particular, described herein are devices, systems and methods that may operate in low ionic strength diluents. Also described are methods of recognizing complex immittance spectrograph patterns to determine the composition of a liquid by pattern recognition.
Abstract:
The invention relates to compounds that are analogs of a cyclic peptide, cyclo[EKTOVNOGN], AFPep, that has anti-estrotrophic activity. The analogs of the invention include peptides and petidomimetics that inhibit estrogen receptor dependent cell proliferation. The compounds of the invention are useful for treating cell proliferative disorders or physiological conditions characterized by undesirable or unwanted estrogen induced cell proliferation, including breast cancer.
Abstract:
A container for a liquid-based food item and a packaged liquid-based food item, such as a soup. A container includes an outer member and an inner dividing member that is positioned inside the outer member to define inner and outer cavities. A liquid, such as water or broth, and one or more seasonings are placed in the inner cavity. Particulates, such as meat and vegetable particulates and, if necessary, water, are placed in the outer cavity. Seasonings are separated from particulates, and the seasoning does not diffuse into the particulates. Thus, the tastes of the individual ingredients are maintained. A sealing member extends across a tops of the inner and outer members to close the package. When the sealing member is removed to open the package, the water or broth with the seasoning, and the particulates and any water can be poured from their respective cavities in a single motion. By reducing or eliminating diffusion of seasonings into particulates, reduced quantities of salt and other seasonings can be added to processed soup products and allows salt and other seasonings to be added just prior to cooking, providing more natural flavor. Separating broth and particulates within a container can also reduce sterilization times.
Abstract:
A system for reporting and processing a matched trade from a market in response to orders submitted by traders includes a management subsystem for developing configuration data regarding products that are to be traded and traders who are authorized to trade. The system further includes a trade processing subsystem for receiving first data representing the matched trade and which processes the first data to create second data representing a processed trade wherein the second data are transmitted to a first recipient and a reporting subsystem for receiving market information and which processes the market information and transmits the processed market information to a second recipient. Methods of reporting and/or processing are also disclosed.
Abstract:
Formulations and methods of use thereof for restoring neuronal tissue function in children and adults afflicted with chronic neurodegenerative diseases, such as neurodegenerative movement disorders and ataxias, seizure disorders, motor neuron diseases, and inflammatory demyelinating disorders. Examples of disorders include Alzheimer's disease (AD) , Parkinson's disease (PD) , and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) . The method involves administering a pharmaceutical composition containing an effective amount of a tetrahydrobenzathiazole, preferably a formulation consisting substantially of the R(+) enantiomer of pramipexole . R(+) pramipexole is generally administered in doses ranging from 0.1-300 mg/kg/daily, preferably 0.5-50 mg/kg/daily, and most preferably 1-10 mg/kg/daily for oral administration. Daily total doses administered orally are typically between 10 mg and 500 mg. Alternatively, R(+) pramipexole can be administered parenterally to humans with acute brain injury in single doses between 10 mg and 100 mg, and/or by continuous intravenous infusions between 10 mg/day and 500 mg/day.

Abstract:
Fluid monitoring methods, sensors and systems are disclosed. Preferred embodiments comprise two or more mechanical resonators, preferably two or more flexural resonators configured for sensing, monitoring or evaluating one or more fluids at multiple positions within one or more fluidic systems. In the methods, sensors and systems of the invention, signals generated in response to stimulation of the mechanical resonators are communicated by multiplexing over a common communication path, and then deconvoluted with respect to the position of the resonators.
Abstract:
Methods, systems and devices are described for rapid characterization and screening of liquid samples to determine properties (e.g., particle size, particle size distribution, molar mass and/or molar mass distribution) thereof with static light scattering and/or dynamic light scattering. The liquid samples can be solutions, emulsions, suspensions or dispersions. One method, includes providing a vessel containing a liquid sample having an exposed surface that defines a gas-liquid sample interface, and analyzing the sample by light scattering methods that include transmitting light through the gas-liquid sample interface into the sample, and detecting light scattered from the sample or from a component thereof. Additional methods are directed to characterizing a plurality of liquid samples or components thereof. The methods, systems, and devices have applications in high-throughput screening, and particularly, in combinatorial materials research and in industrial process control.

Abstract:
Described herein are devices, systems, and methods for determining the composition of fluids, and particularly for describing the identity and concentration of one or more components of a medical fluid such as intravenous fluid. These devices, systems and methods take multiple complex admittance measurements from a fluid sample in order to identify the identity and the concentration of components of the fluid. The identity and concentration of all of the components of the solution may be simultaneously and rapidly determined. In some variations, additional measurement or sensing modalities may be used in addition to admittance spectroscopy, including optical, thermal, chemical, etc.
