In the method for operating a piston engine, the engine is operated in a first operating mode by introducing main fuel into the cylinders (1) after pilot fuel injection has started, and in a second operating mode by introducing the main fuel into the cylinders (1) before the pilot fuel. One or more indicators of auto- ignition and/or a risk of auto-ignition of the main fuel are monitored and com- pared to predetermined ranges indicating auto-ignition or the risk of auto- ignition. If one or more of the monitored indicators is within the predetermined range, the engine is operated in the first operating mode, and if none of the monitored values is within the predetermined range, the engine is operated in the second operating mode.

The present invention relates to a method of a reciprocating combustion engine with at least two cylinders. Primary voltage is taken from a voltage supply and transformed to secondary voltage suitable for ignition purposes. The invention is based on an adaptive control method and means of a combustion engine ignition system. The spark plugs with the highest secondary voltage demand are recognised by continuously measuring the actual secondary voltage demand. The ignition timing is advanced (503) for individual cylinders before the secondary voltage demand reaches a level where misfire can occur.

A cylinder liner (1) of a reciprocating engine, the cylinder liner (2) having an inner surface (3) acting as a running surface (4) for piston rings (5), which running surface (4) comprises an upper portion (U) and a lower portion (L). The upper portion (U)includes at least a top dead centre region of a topmost piston ring (5). Only the upper portion (U) of the running surface (4) is provided with a coating(7) of metal matrix composite reinforced with ceramic particles.

The invention relates to a method for combustion engine pollution control. NO x value of the exhaust gases from the engine is measured (207) and the lambda value in the engine operation is controlled in response to the measured NO x value. In case where the measured NOx value is over the reference value a signal to decrease the NOx emissions by way of increasing the lambda value through a waste-gate control device (28) is outputted by a NO x control (23). An ignition timing offset signal for retarding ignition timing is outputted (202) to an ignition timing control function (25) by the NO x control (23), if the waste-gate control device (28) is unable to lower the NOx value to a targeted NO x level.
