Abstract:
A position reference device for rowing indicates the relative hip and hand positions of the rower over the course of each rowing stroke. The position reference device provides a reference for kineshthetic learning through constant feedback about torso and hand position. Embodiments of the feedback device can be used on either a boat or on a rowing machine. The embodiments for boats in particular provide the immediate on-water feedback that enables a rower to improve technique in a way that conventional feedback devices generally do not. The rowing machine embodiments enable rowers to improve skill while off the water thus enabling the rower to learn better technique even when it is not possible to row on water.
Abstract:
Exercise apparatus for exercising the upper body simultaneously with lower body exercise, comprising a lower body exercise machine and at least one upper body exercise module positioned for use in conjunction with the lower body exercise machine. The upper body exercise module comprises an elongated connector having first and second ends; a user engagement connected to the elongated connector first end for engaging or being engaged by a body appendage of a user; and a resistance mechanism for resisting a force applied to the first end of the elongated connector. Each upper body exercise module is adapted to provide resistance to a full, natural arm swing of at least one arm of the user. Various types of lower body exercise machines, resistance devices, user engagements, relationships between the upper body exercise module and the low body exercise machine, and exercise methods using the apparatus are disclosed.

Abstract:
A compact portable rowing machine features a hollow container (15) that holds a supply of water. Pulling on a drive cord (26) rotates a paddle (40) located within the container to rotate the water to produce a momentum effect. Turbulence in the water provides fluid resistance to the rotation of the paddle. A drive cord is wrapped on a double spool (29) mounted on a clutch (39) to drive the paddle in one direction. The wrapping is such that changing the length of the drive cord between the spool and a handle (23) gripped by a user changes the radius at which tangential force is applied by the cord to the spool to vary the resistance of the machine. In one form the drive cord also forms a portion of the recoil mechanism as a continuous closed loop strap secured at its ends to different spools of a double spool. The handle is constructed so that in a normal operating orientation its position on the strap is fixed, but in unlocked orientation it may be moved to increase or decrease the resistance of the machine.
