The apparatus and process may further by utilized for removing chemical contaminants, such as hydrocarbons, from solid media such as, but not limited to, soil and drill cuttings. An aqueous slurry of the material is pumped as a slurry through a 1/2-inch to 4-inch nozzle, for example, to collide with a stationary plate in an impact chamber at high velocities. The impact partially and preferentially disassociates these materials. The post impact slurry exiting the impact chamber may be usable as-is, or may be further treated, as desired, by secondary component material separation methods, such as gravity, magnetic, mechanical or the like.

The invention provides an apparatus (10) for removing ferrous particles from an oil or gas process liquid or slurry and a method of use. In one aspect, the apparatus comprises a first inner cylindrical sheath (27) and a second outer cylindrical sheath (18) arranged concentrically on a longitudinal axis to create an annular volume (19). At least one helical screw flight (26) on one of the first or second cylindrical sheaths extends substantially or fully across the annular volume, and a magnet assembly (30) extends along at least a part of the longitudinal axis, such that ferrous particles are attracted to an internal cylindrical surface of the annular volume. The apparatus comprises an inlet (12) for a liquid or slurry to enter the annular volume, a liquid or slurry discharge outlet (14) from the annular volume, and a ferrous particle collection location (16) at one end of the apparatus. The screw flight and the cylindrical sheath on which it is mounted are operable to be rotated with respect to the magnet assembly to convey particles along the apparatus to the ferrous particle collection location. The apparatus further comprises a retaining surface (225) configured to retain collected particles as they are conveyed towards the ferrous particle collection location.

Each magnetic member may rotate about an end that is coupled to the support comb. The magnetic members may be magnetostrictive sensors and may include a biorecognition element to bind with a target microorganism. A method for fluid filtration includes coupling the electromagnetic filter between a fluid source and a fluid destination, energizing the solenoids of each electromagnetic filter elements, and flowing a fluid media through the transfer pipe of the electromagnetic filter.
