A jet type coater (12) with a nozzle orifice (18) is provided with an adjustable, internal filter or screen (10) in the head (14) of the coater. The filter (10) has orifices or slots (26A, 26B, 28) which are formed by relatively movable members (28, 32) and is adjustable to a size smaller than that of the nozzle orifice (18), to keep the nozzle orifice (18) unclogged and functioning. The internal filter (10) is also easily clearable on the run without shutdown and cleanable with coating liquid and/or water.

A coater for (450) a moving paper web (452), preferably of the jet type, is disclosed and provided with a sonic oscillator (520) forming a portion of the discharge orifice or exit tip (475), which is preferably adjacent the discharge of the coater (450) and which is opposite the side of the discharge likely to be applied the moving web (452). The sonic oscillator (520) keeps the orifice or tip (475) clean while minimizing any effect of the oscillator (520) on the coating actually applied to the web (452). The invention covers both a method and apparatus. A method, apparatus, system, and computer program product for clearing flow disruptions in the coating applicator and a web inspection system are also disclosed. The latter is downstream of the applicator (450) to detect coating defects and communicate a cross-machine location of the defect to activate vibrations at that location to clear the flow disruption.

A plurality of simultaneously applied coating fluids (72, 74, 76, 134, 136) is coated on a substrate (30, 94) by moving the substrate along a path through a coating station. A plurality of flowing layers of coating fluid is formed in face-to-face contact with each other to form a composite layer (138). This composite layer flows at a speed that is sufficiently high to form a continuous flowing composite layer jet to the substrate surface for the coating width regardless of the direction of flow of the fluid jet.

An applicator die for creating and applying laminarized ribbons of polymeric film to a target surface, such as but not limited to a surface of an automobile body component. In one embodiment, the protective film is an aqueous emulsion of polyvinyl acetate and is used to create a continuous peelable film to protect a surface. In another embodiment, the polymeric is polyvinyl chloride and it is applied to create an anti-chip coating. The applicator die has an internal supply gallery and an outlet slot of complex shape to emit a laminarized ribbon of polymer-based material that allows the material to be applied directly to the target surface without masking. A robot is used to control movement of the die. The die includes temperature control.

Die Erfindung betrifft einen Düsenkopf (5) zur Abgabe eines Spritzstrahls eines Auftragsmittels, insbesondere eines Dämmstoffmittels, wobei ein bestimmter Volumenstrom des Auftragsmittels durch den Spritzstrahl appliziert wird und der Spritzstrahl im Wesentlichen flach in einer Strahlebene verläuft, während der Spritzstrahl in der Strahlebene eine bestimmte Strahlbreite aufweist, die von dem Volumenstrom des Auftragsmittels abhängt. Es wird vorgeschlagen, dass der Düsenkopf (5) so ausgebildet ist, dass die Strahlbreite innerhalb eines großen Volumenstromarbeitsbereichs im Wesentlichen abstandsunabhängig konstant ist.
