The present invention provides a hot air welding apparatus (10) that provides accurate and repeatable control of the drive wheel (32,24) speed. To afford very precise control of the speed and the relative rotation of the drive wheels at all times during the welding process, the present invention is provided with a computer control system (23) and two high torque stepper motors (40,42), one for each drive wheel. The computer control system allows the speed and position of the drive wheels to be regulated with a very high accuracy. The computer control system allows the drive wheel settings to be adjusted while the seam is being welded and further includes an automatic ramp capability, a repeat mode, and a test strip mode. Further, the computer control system is capable of controlling the temperature of the air used in the welding process.

This invention pertains to methods and apparatus for use in constructing a garment including a stretched elastic. Specifically, the invention contemplates incorporating stretched elastic (112) into a continuous web (121), including one or more segments which exert retractive forces in directions counterproductive to the function of either the web, the garment, or both, and nullifying that portion of the stretched elastic which would be counterproductive. The elastics may be cut with a cutter (154) at appropriate loci. The stretch may be intermittently reduced or eliminated on one or more selected ones of the elastics as the elastics are incorporated into the web (121). A special coating may be used on the processing rolls (102, 156, 158, 168) to maintain the width dimension of the web at loci disposed after incorporation of elastic (112) stretched across the transverse dimension of the web (121). Transverse bonds may be formed on the web using a rotary carrying drum (168), and energy application devices which rotate with the drum (168), to increase bond forming time.
