A film that contains a thermoplastic composition having a substantial portion of a renewable, natural starch polymer, and yet is elastic and exhibits good strength properties, is provided. Although starch is normally chemically incompatible with most elastomeric polymers due to their different polarities, the present inventors have discovered that phase separation may be minimized by selectively controlling certain aspects of the film, such as the nature of the elastomeric polymer and the starch polymer, and other film components, the relative amount of the film components, and the process for making the film.

Polylactic acid fibers formed from a thermoplastic composition that contains polylactic acid and a polymeric toughening additive are provided. The present inventors have discovered that the specific nature of the components and process by which they are blended may be carefully controlled to achieve a composition having desirable morphological features. More particularly, the toughening additive can be dispersed as discrete physical domains within a continuous phase of the polylactic acid. These domains have a particular size, shape, and distribution such that upon fiber drawing, they absorb energy and become elongated. This allows the resulting composition to exhibit a more pliable and softer behavior than the otherwise rigid polylactic acid. Through selective control over the components and method employed, the present inventors have discovered that the resulting fibers may thus exhibit good mechanical properties, both during and after melt spinning.

A colored web material comprising a plurality of discrete extended elements. The colored web material comprises a colorant incorporated in the material itself or a colorant disposed on at least one surface of the web material. The discrete extended elements comprise thinned portions at the distal ends and/or along the sidewalls of the discrete extended elements. In one embodiment, the discrete extended elements have a diameter of less than about 500 microns. In one embodiment, the colored web material comprises at least about 95 discrete extended elements per square centimeter. In one embodiment, the discrete extended elements have an aspect ratio of at least about 0.2.

An article includes a film and a non-woven having fibers, and an embossed seal joining a portion of the film and the non-woven. The seal includes discrete extended elements formed in the film and surrounded by lands in the film. The discrete extended elements having open proximal ends, open or closed distal ends, and sidewalls disposed between the proximal and distal ends, and portions of the discrete extended elements having a thickness less than that of the lands. Fibers of the non-woven are embedded in at least one of the lands and in the sidewalls of the discrete extended elements through the open proximal ends.

Medical devices and related methods are disclosed. In some embodiments, a method of manufacturing a medical device or a medical device component includes contacting a non-fluid first member and a second member, the first member comprising a first polymer and an alignable material different from the first polymer; aligning the alignable material; and bonding the first and second members together.
摘要:
In a method and apparatus for forming a bonded web comprised at least in part of a polyester, a first material web (23) and a second material web (25) are arranged in opposed relationship with each other at least along those portions of the first and second material webs (23,25) to be bonded together. At least one of the first and second material webs is comprised at least in part of the polyester. The opposed webs are transported in a machine direction (MD) to the nip(35) of a bonding apparatus (21) comprised of a first bonding member (31) and a second bonding member (33) defining the nip therebetween for passage of the opposed first and second material webs therebetween in the machine direction. A shear force is applied to the webs generally in the machine direction at the nip and the webs are mechanically bonded together at the nip while the shear force is applied to webs.
