To provide a coating composition for a lubricating coating film capable of forming a lubricating coating film having a high level of flexibility on surfaces of various base materials. A coating composition for a lubricating coating film including: (A) a phenolic resin, (B) an epoxy resin having an epoxy equivalent weight of 600 to 4000, and (C) at least one type of solid lubricant; and having a weight ratio of component (A) to the total weight of component (A) and component (B) of at least 50 weight %.

This invention relates to a composition containing: (a) a hydrocarbon fluid; and (b) a hydrocarbyl- and hydroxy-substituted aromatic condensate comprising the reaction product of: (1) at least 75 mole percent based on the total amount of (b)(1) and (b)(2) of a hydrocarbyl- and hydroxy-substituted aromatic compound wherein the hydrocarbyl substituent is a linear substituent containing 8 to 36 carbon atoms; (2) 0.001 to 25 mole percent based on the total amount of (b)(1) and (b)(2) of a hydrocarbyl- and hydroxy-substituted aromatic compound wherein the hydrocarbyl substituent is a branched substituent containing 8 to 20 carbon atoms; and (3) an amount of an aldehyde, ketone, or reactive equivalent thereof effective to condense (1) and (2) to form the hydrocarbyl- and hydroxy-substituted aromatic condensate. The invention further relates to method of preparing the condensate and its use as an additive in a crude oil, a liquid fuel or an oil of lubricating viscosity.

A composition comprises a sulphur free reaction product of: (a)(i) a hydrocarbyl substituted aromatic compound containing an acidic group selected from the group consisting of a carboxylic group, a hydroxyl group and mixtures thereof; and (a)(ii) an organic nitrogen-containing base reacted with the acidic group. The composition is obtained by a preparatory process and is useful in a method for lubricating an internal combustion engine to include where the lubricant has reduced levels of sulphur, phosphorus and sulphated ash.

Paraffin-containing liquid pour point depressants comprising the reaction product of a hydrocarbyl-substituted phenol and an aldehyde wherein: the olefin used in the preparation of the hydrocarbyl-substituted phenol has a high vinylidene content; the reaction between the hydrocarbyl-substituted phenol and the aldehyde is acid or base catalyzed; and/or the reaction further comprises phenol, are particularly useful for treating crude oils which have an initial pour point of 4°C or higher, decreasing the fluid's pour point and improving the fluid's low temperature handling properties.

The liquid friction control composition may also comprise other components such as a solid lubricant, a wetting agent, a consistency modifier, and a preservative. The liquid friction control compositions may be used to modify the interfacial friction characteristics in sliding and rolling-sliding contact such as steel wheel-rail systems including mass transit and freight systems.
