In one aspect, the present invention comprises providing an additive or aggregate to be applied directly to one or more of the components of a ceramic coating and which is constituted by carbonate apatites particles which are maintained as aggregates within a matrix of silicoaluminates at firing temperatures of the ceramic coatings, where the main function of these aggregates is to provide the ceramic coating properties selected from the group comprising: low effusivity, wear resistance, resistance to chemical attack and resistance to staining. In other aspects, the present invention comprises providing a ceramic coating incorporating said additive and a method for providing a ceramic coating with properties selected from the group comprising: low effusivity, wear resistance, resistance to chemical attack and resistance to staining.

Metal ion conducting ceramic materials are disclosed having characteristics of high ion conductivity for certain alkali and monovalent metal ions at low temperatures, high selectivity for the metal ions, good current efficiency and stability in water and corrosive media under static and electrochemical conditions. The metal ion conducting ceramic materials are fabricated to be deficient in the metal ion. One general formulation of the metal ion conducting ceramic materials is Me 1+x+y-z M III y M IV 2-y Si x P 3-x O 12-z/2 , wherein Me is Na + , Li + , K + , Rb + , Cs + , Ag + , or mixtures thereof, 2.0 ≤ x ≤ 2.4, 0.0 ≤ y ≤ 1.0, and 0.05 ≤ z ≤ 0.9, where M III is Al 3+ , Ga 3+ , Cr 3+ , Sc 3+ , Fe 3+ , In 3+ , Yb 3+ , Y 3+ , or mixtures thereof and M IV is Ti 4+ , Zr 4+ , Hf 4+ , or mixtures thereof.

Upon producing a transparent polycrystalline material, a suspension liquid (or slurry 1) is prepared, the suspension liquid being made by dispersing a raw-material powder in a solution, the raw-material powder including optically anisotropic single-crystalline particles to which a rare-earth element is added. A formed body is obtained from the suspension liquid by means of carrying out slip casting in a space with a magnetic field applied. On this occasion, while doing a temperature control so that the single-crystalline particles demonstrate predetermined magnetic anisotropy, one of static magnetic fields and rotary magnetic fields is selected in compliance with a direction of an axis of easy magnetization in the single-crystalline particles, and is then applied to them. A transparent polycrystalline material is obtained by sintering the formed body, the transparent polycrystalline material having a polycrystalline structure whose crystal orientation is controlled. In this calcination step, after subjecting the formed body to primary sintering at a temperature of 1, 600-1, 900 K, the resulting primarily-sintered body undergoes hot-isotropic-press sintering (or HIP processing) at a temperature of 1,600-1,900 K.

The invention provides a particulate composition adapted for forming a bone graft substitute cement upon mixing with an aqueous solution, comprising i) a calcium sulfate hemihydrate powder, wherein the calcium sulfate hemihydrate is present at a concentration of at least about 50 weight percent based on the total weight of the particulate composition; ii) a monocalcium phosphate monohydrate powder; iii) a non-porous β-tricalcium phosphate powder; and iv) a porous β-tricalcium phosphate powder. Bone graft substitute cements made therefrom, a bone graft substitute kit comprising the particulate composition, methods of making and using the particulate composition, and articles made from the bone graft substitute cement are also provided.

A flame spray pyrolysis method for making nanoscale, lithium ion- conductive ceramic powders comprises providing a precursor solution comprising chemical precursors dissolved in an organic solvent, and spraying the precursor solution into an oxidizing flame to form a nanoscale, lithium ion-conductive ceramic powder, wherein a concentration of the chemical precursors in the solvent ranges from 1 to 5,5 M. The precursor solution can comprise 1-20% excess lithium with respect to a stoichiometric composition of the ceramic powder. Nominal compositions of the nanoscale, ceramic powders are Li 1.4 AI 0.4 M 1.6 (PO 4 ) 3 where M is Ti or Ge.
