The sensor includes a filter member 31 including a plurality of cells that trap PM in exhaust gas, electrode members 32, 33 arranged to face each other with the cell interposed therebetween and forming a capacitor, an electric heater 34 that executes, when a predetermined amount of PM has accumulated in the cells, filter regeneration for combusting and removing the PM, a temperature sensor 35 that acquires the temperature of the filter member 31, a storage unit 40 that stores therein a reference temperature, which is the temperature of the filter member 31 in a case where the filter regeneration has been executed in a state in which PM is not flowing into the filter member 31, and estimation units 42, 43, 44 that estimate a PM amount included in the exhaust gas based on an electrostatic capacitance change amount between the electrode members 32, 33 during a regeneration interval period, and estimate the PM amount included in the exhaust gas based on a difference between the temperature acquired by the temperature sensor 35 and the reference temperature during a filter regeneration interval.

Thereby, in the idling operation state after travel of a vehicle, generation of NO 2 by the oxidation catalyst 31a included in the exhaust gas after-treatment device 31 of the exhaust passage 15 is decreased, and emission of NO 2 to the atmosphere is suppressed.
