A method of reinforcing a support element (1,101) such as a wooden pole carrying overhead power lines, in which a resin impregnated fabric (3,103) is provided around the support element in the region to be reinforced and cured. In one embodiment. the fabric comprises a glass-fibre cloth (3) which is wrapped around tne support element and a resin impervious sheath (5) is positioned surrounding the fabric. Resin is introduced into the sheath which is sealed at the bottom thereof and cured. In an alternative embodiment, the fabric (103) is pre-impregnated with a curable resin system, and the fabric is adapted to be electrically conductive and passing an electrical current through the fabric effects cure of the resin.

A carpet seaming apparatus includes an elongated bonding tape having an electrical resistance circuit with contacts at the edge of the tape mounted on the face thereof with a hot melt adhesive in the form of elongated beads running the length of the tape that melts in response to electrical current in the resistive conductors. A tool having spaced apart electrical contacts for engaging the contacts adjacent the edges of the tape inducing an electrical current therein for heating and melting the hot melt adhesive.

A method for joining primary and secondary members includes providing a primary member, a secondary member and a heating element which is joined to one of the primary and secondary members. The heating element includes an electrically insulating matrix material and an electrically conductive reinforcing clement extending through the matrix material. The method further includes bringing the other of the primary and secondary members and the heating element into engagement and controlling a flow of electrical current in the reinforcing element so as to resistively heat and fuse at least some of the matrix material of the heating element with a matrix material of the other of the primary and secondary members. The method may be used to join a primary member such as a composite tubular and a secondary member such as a component for terminating the composite tubular.
