The transmission (12) is a splitter type comprising a main section (48) connected in series with a blocked splitter type auxiliary section (50). The auxiliary section blockers (172) and clutch members (164) are provided with ramps (218, 220, 222, 224) which will tend to align the blockers and ramps in a nonblocking condition under the influence of biasing spring (178) if the main section is in neutral. A control unit (38) receives input signals and commands transmission shifts in a sequence including shifting the main section into neutral an shifting the auxiliary section to a new ratio during each shift procedure.

Die Erfindung bezieht sich auf ein automatisches Getriebe, das energiesparend geschaltet werden kann und jederzeit auch eine Schaltung der Gänge von Hand möglich ist. Dazu sind zur Betätigung eines Schaltfingers (17) in beiden Schaltrichtungen zwei hydraulische Arbeitszylinder (1,1a) vorgesehen, von denen der eine (1) zum Einschalten der Gänge in Druckräumen (2, 3) einen doppelwirkenden Kolben (4) enthält und der andere (1a) zum Ausschalten der Gänge zwei, auf der Kolbenstange (11) frei verschiebbare Schleppkolben (7, 8) aufweist. Die Schleppkolben (7, 8) sind voneinander durch einen auf der Kolbenstange (11) vorgesehenen Anschlag (9) getrennt, wobei im Schleppkolbenzylinder (1a) ein entsprechender Ansatz oder Anschlag (10) vorgesehen ist, so daß zwischen den Stirnseiten des Zylinders (1) und den auf der Kolbenstange beweglichen Schleppkolben (7 bzw. 8) Druckräume (5 bzw. 6) entstehen, die durch einen Überströmkanal verbunden sind und über einen Anschluß (14) Verbindung mit den Steuerventilen (34) haben. Die Druckräume sind nur während der Betätigung ihrer Kolben mit der Druckleitung verbunden, so daß die Kolben sonst frei beweglich sind.

A manual selector valve (350), whose setting is controlled by the vehicle operator, distributes flow from a fluid pump to an ON-OFF valve (300) and to a hydraulic clutch (36) which on being engaged disposes the transmission for forward drive. Two ON-OFF valves (270 and 300) act as pressure distributors and enable the manual valve (350) to overrule the operation of the automatic shift valves. The state of two solenoid-actuated valves (180 and 220) is determined by an electrical signal received from a microprocessor that receives operational information and has stored within its memory logic that controls the signals. If the electronic control system should fail, the state of the solenoid valves (180 and 220) is determined hydraulically and mechanically thus permitting complete functional response as the operator manually displaces the selector valve (350). A variable force solenoid actuates a line pressure regulator valve (104), which cooperates with a solenoid pressure regulator valve (130) to reduce line pressure. A pressure modulator valve (150) directs manual valve outlet flow to the solenoid valves (180 and 220) which function as shift valves.

@ The invention relates to an automatic transmission and a method for controlling the same. On an input and an output shafts (6, 7) of the transmission, there are provided a plurality of gear pairs (61, 71, ...) which have different reduction ratios. One of the gears (65) of the gear pair (65, 75) having the smallest reduction ratio is operably connected with the input shaft (6) through a multi-disk clutch (19) and the torque transmitted from the input shaft (6) to the gear can be controlled by adjusting the thrusting force applied to the clutch (19). When the selection of the gear pair is changed, the gear pair under operation at present is brought into the neutral condition and, at the same time, the thrusting force of the clutch (19) is increased. Thereby, the torque of the input shaft (6) is transmitted to the output shaft (7) through the clutch (19) and a rotational synchronism of the input and output shafts is advanced by adjusting the thrusting force. When the rotational synchronism is completed, the gear pair to be selected is brought under the operation.

In the apparatus, a clutch gear (10a, 10b, 10c) associated with a selected shift gear is automatically restored to the neutral position when completion of the gear shift is not detected upon lapse of a predetermined length of time after starting of the gear shift.

All incorporated in the control unit housing in one body are the component parts of the former mechanism of a first hydraulic actuatorfor gear shifting and gear selection of the speed change gear, solenoid valve means for controlling said first hydraulic actuator, position sensors for sensing positions of the first hydraulic actuator indicative of the selected gear position and shifted gear position of the speed change gear, as well as of the latter mechanism of a second hydraulic actuatorfor engagement and disengagement of the clutch, solenoid valve means for controlling the second hydraulic actuator, and a position sensor for sensing the position of the second hydraulic actuator indicative of engagement and disengagement of the clutch. An air breather provided on the control unit housing on the side of the speed change gear communicates with an air chamber of the second hydraulic actuator through a passage formed within the control unit housing, to also serve as an air breather for the same chamber.
