A catalytic Wittig method utilizing a phosphine including the steps of providing a phosphine oxide precatalyst and reducing the phosphine oxide precatalyst to produce the phosphine; forming a phosphonium ylide precursor from the phosphine and a reactant; generating a phosphonium ylide from the phosphonium ylide precursor; reacting the phosphonium yiide precursor with the aldehyde, ketone, or ester to form the olefin and the phosphine oxide which then reenters the cycle. The invention is also directed to a Mitsunobu reaction catalytic in phosphine.

The invention is directed to a phosphine compound represented by general formula (1) wherein R' and R" independently are selected from alkyl, cycloalkyl and 2-furyl radicals, or R' and R" are joined together to form with the phosphorous atom a carbon-phosphorous monocycle comprising at least 3 carbon atoms or a carbon-phosphorous bicycle; the alkyl radicals, cycloalkyl radicals, and carbon-phosphorous monocycle being unsubstituted or substituted by at least one radical selected from the group of alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkoxy, and aryloxy radicals; Cp s is a partially substituted or completely substituted cyclopentadien-1-yl group, including substitutions resulting in a fused ring system, and wherein a substitution at the 1-position of the cyclopentadien-1-yl group is mandatory when the cyclopentadien-1-yl group is not part of a fused ring system or is part of an indenyl group. Also claimed is the use of these phosphines as ligands in catalytic reactions and the preparation of these phosphines.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for selectively producing a polysubstituted olefin suitable for a luminescent material, etc. SOLUTION: The method for selectively producing a polysubstituted olefin comprises reacting a first carbon atom in an alkene compound in which an organic group containing an atom such as Si, etc., is bonded through the atom to a second carbon atom in the first carbon atom and the second carbon atom forming an alkene bond with a first aryl compound containing a first aryl group to bond the first aryl group to the first carbon atom, reacting the first carbon atom with a second aryl compound containing a second aryl group to bond the second aryl group to the first carbon atom and reacting the second carbon atom with a third aryl compound containing a third aryl group to bond the third aryl group to the second carbon atom. The reactions in which the first aryl group and the second aryl group are bonded to the first carbon atom are Mizoroki-Heck reactions and the reaction in which the third group is bonded to the second carbon atom is a cross coupling reaction. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for catalytically oxidizing an olefin or a cycloolefin, for the purpose of forming an α,β-enol, an α,β-olefin ketone, and an epoxide. SOLUTION: This process for catalytically oxidizing the olefin or the cycloolefin comprises solely using a μ-oxy-monometal porphyrin, a bimetal porphyrin, a supported-type μ-oxy-monometal porphyrin or bimetal porphyrin as a catalyst, or using a complex of the μ-oxy-monometal porphyrin or the bimetal porphyrin and a salt or an oxide of a transition metal as a composite catalyst, in a catalyst concentration of 1-50 ppm in the presence of an oxidizing agent, such as air, oxygen, or a mixture of the oxygen and an inert gas, under a reaction pressure of 1-10 atm at a reaction temperature of 20-150°C in a reaction period of 0.5-5 hr. The catalyst is supported on a carrier, so that the catalytic reaction may be conducted homogeneously or heterogeneously. Thus, the process has such advantage that reaction condition is mild, an amount of the catalyst to be applied is small, an efficiency of the catalyst is high, and selectivity is good. The herbicidal composition comprising these compounds and their application to crop protection.
