Abstract: A multi-level inverter control system includes a power storage system having a high voltage terminal, a low voltage terminal, and an intermediate voltage terminal. The intermediate voltage terminal is at a voltage between the high voltage terminal and the low voltage terminal. A multi-level inverter includes a plurality of switches, a high voltage input connected to the high voltage terminal, a low voltage input connected to the low voltage terminal, and an intermediate voltage input connected to the intermediate voltage terminal. A controller is controllably coupled to the multi-level inverter. The controller includes at least a processor and a memory. The memory stores instructions configured to cause the controller to operate the multi-level inverter in a three-level inverter mode, a full power two-level inverter mode, a first partial power two-level inverter mode and a second partial power two-level inverter mode.

Abstract: A system for controlling a propulsion system of a vehicle includes a switching system including a first switching device connecting a battery system to a first set of windings of an electric motor, and a second switching device connecting the battery system to a second set of windings. The system also includes a controller configured to transition the propulsion system from an initial propulsion mode in which an initial voltage is applied to the electric motor, to a target mode in which a target voltage is applied. The transitioning includes controlling the first switching device to provide current to the first set of windings at the initial voltage to produce torque, and subsequently controlling the second switching device to cause the battery system to apply the target voltage to the second set of windings while the current is provided to the first set of windings at the initial voltage.

Abstract: A power control system for a battery system of a vehicle includes one or more supplemental protection devices that are connected to at least one of a first contactor, a second contactor, one of N fuses, and one of N vehicle loads. A battery management module is configured to measure and store a plurality of state of health parameters for the battery system and to selectively operate the one or more supplemental protection devices in a coverage gap between first and second coverage areas handled by the first contactor and the second contactor and the N fuses based on a calibration function and/or calibration parameters. A telematics system selectively sends the plurality of state of health parameters for the battery system to a remote server and to receive at least one of a new calibration function and new calibration parameters for the vehicle from the remote server.

Abstract: An electric vehicle, system and method of charge transfer at the electric vehicle. The vehicle includes a charging circuit and a processor. The charging circuit includes a first battery, a second battery and a motor winding. The processor determines a desired reference current of the motor winding, a first voltage of the first battery and a second voltage of the second battery, calculates a power loss for each of a plurality of conduction modes based on the desired reference current, the first voltage and the second voltage, wherein each of the plurality of conduction modes transfers charge between the first battery and the second battery, selects a conduction mode from the plurality of conduction modes that has a least power loss, establishes a duty cycle parameter for the selected mode, and applies the conduction mode and the duty cycle parameter to the charging circuit to transfer the charge.

Abstract: A power control system for an electric vehicle comprises N power inverters configured to connect to a battery system of the electric vehicle. Each of the N power inverters includes a plurality of power switches, where N is an integer greater than one. The N power inverters are configured to connect to stator phase windings of N electric machines, respectively. A controller is configured to determine a switching frequency for the N electric machines and (N−1) phase offsets for (N−1) ones of the N electric machines, generate a set of pulse width modulation (PWM) switching signals at the switching frequency for a first one of the N power inverters, and output (N−1) sets of PWM switching signals to the (N−1) ones of the N electric machines based on the set of PWM switching signals and the (N−1) phase offsets.
