Abstract: A method for forming a protective electrode coating on an electrode to be used in a lithium-sulfur battery is provided. The method includes contacting one or more surfaces of the electrode with a polymeric admixture, and polymerizing the polymeric admixture to form the protective electrode coating. The polymeric admixture includes a plurality of monomers, for example heterocyclic acetal monomers and/or cyclic ether monomers, and a lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) initiator. In certain instances, the polymeric admixture may also include a structural additive and/or a lithium salt. The contacting may include applying a thin film on the one or more surfaces of the electrode, and the polymerization may be heat activated.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to electrolyte systems and/or separators for electrochemical cells that cycle lithium ions and which may have lithium metal electrodes. The electrochemical cell includes a liquid electrolyte system that fills voids and pores within the electrochemical cell. The electrolyte system includes two or more lithium salts and two or more solvents. The two or more lithium salts include bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiN(FSO2)2) (LIFSI) and lithium perchlorate (LiClO4). The two or more solvents include a first solvent and a second solvent. The first solvent may be a fluorinated cyclic carbonate. The second solvent may be a linear carbonate. A volumetric ratio of the first solvent to the second solvent may be 1:4. The electrochemical cell may include a surface-modified separator that has one or more coatings or fillers.

Abstract: An electrode component for an electrochemical cell is provided herein. The electrode component includes a current collector having a first surface, a metal oxide layer disposed on the first surface of the current collector, and a lithium-containing layer bonded to the first surface of the current collector. The metal oxide layer includes a plurality of features. A method for manufacturing such an electrode component is also provided herein. The method includes directing a laser beam toward the first surface of the current collector in the presence of oxygen to form the metal oxide layer on the first surface and applying the lithium-containing layer to the metal oxide layer thereby bonding the lithium-containing layer with the current collector.

Abstract: A natural gas fueled vehicle, includes a natural gas fueled Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) to provide motive power to the vehicle. A pressurizable tank is disposed on the vehicle to contain a natural gas. A natural gas adsorbent is disposed in the tank. A fuel supply tube is to convey the natural gas to the ICE. A scroll compressor is on the vehicle to receive the natural gas from the tank and to deliver a first mixture of compressed natural gas and an oil to a gas and oil separator. The gas and oil separator is to receive the first mixture of the compressed natural gas and the oil from the scroll compressor and to separate the oil from the compressed natural gas and to deliver the compressed natural gas to the fuel supply tube substantially free from the oil.

Abstract: A method for manufacturing an interfacial lithium fluoride layer for an electrochemical cell that cycles lithium ions is disclosed. In the method, a substrate is positioned in a reaction chamber of an atomic layer deposition reactor and a lithium fluoride (LiF) precursor is introduced into the reaction chamber such that the LiF precursor contacts and chemically reacts with functional groups on the substrate. Then, an oxidant is introduced into the reaction chamber to form a single molecular layer of lithium fluoride on the substrate. The lithium fluoride layer is formed on the substrate at a temperature of greater than or equal to about 110 degrees Celsius to less than or equal to about 250 degrees Celsius.

Abstract: A thermal barrier component for an electrochemical cell according to various aspects of the present disclosure includes a functional material. The functional material includes at least one of a hydrate of a metal carbonate and a hydrate of a metal phosphate. The functional material is configured to release water vapor at a first temperature of greater than or equal to about 100° C. and decompose to release a gaseous fire retardant at a second temperature of greater than or equal to about 300° C. Another thermal barrier component according to various aspects of the present disclosure includes a hydrate and a fire retardant. The hydrate is configured to release water in an amount greater than or equal to about 1 kg at a first temperature of greater than or equal to about 100° C. The fire retardant is configured to decompose at a second temperature of greater than or equal to about 300° C.

Abstract: Lithium ion-exchanged zeolite particles and methods of making such lithium ion-exchanged zeolite particles are provided herein.
